Overlooked: Newly Recorded Jazz and Improvised Music (Audio)

Jul 27, 2021

After the local news at noon, a score of new scores, charts, and improvised music played and composed by musicians typically considered to be working in the jazz idiom. The broadcast will include 19 newly recorded pieces and one from 1969, but never released until now — duos, trios, quartets, quintets, and large ensembles comprised of musicians ranging in age from 20 to 70. Some are well known, most are not. Plus some standards and some originals, some in and some out. Featuring music from Roy Hargrove and Marcus Miller; Bill Evans; Anthony Braxton; Broken Shadows; Kevin Sun; Maria Grand; Silke Eberhard; William Parker; Ben Goldberg; Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas; James Brandon Lewis; Arturo O’Farrill; Chris Speed; Rafael Toral; Matt Mitchell and Kate Gentile; The Killing Popes; Anthony Pirog; Sylvie Courvoisier, Ned Rothenberg, and Julian Sartorius; Barry Altschul; as well as work from the recently deceased Mario Pavone.

Overlooked is a show focusing on overlooked and under-heard jazz, improvisational, and other fringe music, from early roots to contemporary experiments, a mix of familiar to rare, classic to weird. Live from the shadow of Overlook Mountain in Ulster County.

Host Rob Saffer is the former Executive Director and Producer of the Creative Music Foundation.
