On August 14, 50 people attended a Catskill Village Board meeting at the Senior Center in Catskill. A newly formed group, Greene Renewable Energy and Environmental Network (GREEN) presented information about gas waste brine, a toxic substance produced by horizontal hydrofracking and currently being used in some places as road de-icer. GREEN also presented a proposal for a law to prohibit and ban the use of the substance on roads or for disposal of it at the wastewater treatment plant. The Village Board discussed the issue with comments from citizens for 33 minutes and proposed finalizing the draft for a vote at their next meeting in 2 weeks. Several members of GREEN spoke and described the numerous detrimental effects of gas waste brine. The Village Board seemed to have a consensus that the brine ban law would pass soon.
