Seventy percent of pesticides used in agriculture today are herbicides, designed to kill weeds growing in farmers' fields across the U.S. However weeds naturally develop resistance, resulting in farmers using increasingly greater quantities and mixtures of herbicides. Join Food Sleuth Radio host and Registered Dietitian, Melinda Hemmelgarn, for her interview with David Mortensen, Ph.D., Professor of Weed Ecology at Pennsylvania State University. Mortensen will discuss the unintended consequences of herbicides – their effects on non-target plants, our environment (food and water), and children's health. Mortensen explains how herbicide drift reduces crop diversity, and suggests alternatives to herbicides, including crop rotation, increased crop diversity, and cover crops. Produced by Dan Hemmelgarn.
