Nothing Real Radio Hour: Ocracoke Collage

Nothing Real Radio Hour: Ocracoke Collage. Broadcast image by Sam Sebren. (Aug 30, 2022)

Created by Sam Sebren.

For this late summer edition of the Nothing Is Real Radio Hour, host and creator Sam Sebren premieres a new sound collage constructed from field recordings and electronic experiments made while visiting Ocracoke Island in 2021. This piece reflects the tranquility and slow pace of life on the island, with the encroachment of consumer conveniences and global issues, always looming. Water is a prevalent theme and metaphor throughout the mixture of sounds. The collage, cut and assembled from more than fifty hours of recordings, is conceived for radio as a quasi-radio theatre experience.

The Nothing Is Real Radio Hour includes sound and transmission arts works by Sebren, who is based in Athens, NY, and occasionally works by other artists, both pre-recorded and performed live in the studio. In a multidisciplinary practice, much of Sebren's recent work has challenged notions of accepted reality in art, advertising, and public spaces. In mediums including sound, Sebren's work blurs actual, imagined, and technological realities as he critiques socio-political rules & regulations in our consumer "culture" and urges his audience to smile and re-think our priorities.
