Overlooked: Revisiting 1960s Free Jazz with Ezz-thetics (Audio)

After the local news at noon, the broadcast will focus on 1960s free jazz and improvisation, specifically on reissued classic recordings from Hat Hut’s two-year-old ezz-thetics sub-label. Host Rob Saffer will play tracks from the "ezz-thetics Revisited” series which provides fresh insights on some of the most important and influential jazz recordings and musicians of the era, sometimes playing in surprising combinations. Featuring music by New York Contemporary Five 1963; Albert Ayler, Berlin 1966; John Coltrane, Newport 1963; Archie Shepp with Malachi Favors and Philly Joe Jones; Jimmy Giuffre; Cecil Taylor; Mike Taylor with Jack Bruce; Paul Bley Trio; Sun Ra; Joe Harriott; New York Contemporary Five, Copenhagen 1963; Albert Ayler, Radio 1964; Marion Brown; Joe Harriott Quintet; Ornette Coleman; Albert Ayler NY Eye and Ear Control; Albert Ayler, Copenhagen 1964; and John Coltrane with Eric Dolphy, 1961.

“Overlooked” is a show focusing on overlooked and under-heard jazz, improvisational, and other fringe music, from early roots to contemporary experiments, a mix of familiar to rare, classic to weird. Live from the shadow of Overlook Mountain in Ulster County.
