Bread Scores (Audio)

Created by Masimba Hwati (2021). Introduced by Austin T. Richey.

Masimba Hwati's integration of traditional Chimurenga chants into performative sound art situates him within a Black Atlantic dialogue on post-colonial resistance and cultural preservation. First articulated by Paul Gilroy in 1993, the Black Atlantic is a multi-cultural and multi-temporal feedback loop between continental, diasporic, and otherwise displaced Black people globally. Hwati's art resonates with the themes of migration, resistance, and cultural memory that are central to the Black Atlantic discourse, and like my other artist additions to the Wave Farm Radio Art Archive use transmission and broadcast arts to articulate their own personal explorations within the sounds and silences of the Black Atlantic. -Introduced by Wave Farm Radio Art Fellow 2024, Austin T.
