Music from around the world is featured. Bringing the audience into the realm of other cultures through music, hopefully expanding empathy for the “other,” and recognizing that “other” in ourselves. Even though Indian Classical music is a vocal tradition many different instruments are also used in Raga performance, plucked instruments such as the sitar and sarod, bowed instruments like the violin and sarangi, or wind instruments: the bansuri flute or oboe like shennai. Today we hear two percussion instruments set up to play melodies. First: The Jal-Tarang, a set of porcelain bowls of varying size filled with water to different levels such that when struck with a small wooden stick the bowls sing and ring with pure tones. We follow that with a Raga performed on a group of tuned tablas called the Tabla Tarang. Both sets of instruments are arrayed in front of the performer in a semi-circle.
