Pacifica Radio went on the air in 1949 to bring a new voice and a new style of radio to the airwaves. Voices that had never been heard on the airwaves were suddenly given space, to present their views, their art, their philosophy. Pacifica's flagship station – KPFA in Berkeley, CA – began airing voices like Alan Watts, bringing Eastern philosophy to the Western world; Allen Ginsberg "Howled" the beat poet awakening; W.E.B. DuBois explained the history of Africans on the American continent; Rosa Parks and Paul Robeson interrupted their lives to take a stand against racism and injustice; Rachel Carson started the modern environmental movement; Aldous Huxley blew our minds with philosophy and science-based futuristic thinking; Harry Bridges organized labor against the robber-barons and captains of industry; Dorothy Parker gave us an insider's peek into writing, and Lenny Bruce changed the face of comedy forever. Pacifica producer Andrea Kissack and former drama & literature director Susan Stone produced an insightful montage of voices to celebrate 50 years of public affairs programming from 1949 to 1999.
