Matt Volla

Matt Volla is a San Francisco-based artist who drives to the beach in a car powered by vegetable oil. His visual art and performances have been exhibited in galleries and art centers such as PS1/MOMA, The Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), Gallery 2 (Chicago), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and SFMOMA (San Francisco), and others. Volla’s video and sound art have been presented in multiple venues, including the Rotterdam International Film Festival in the Netherlands. Volla’s work investigates the relationship between inscription and enactment, often inventing new ways to annotate everyday patterns as scripts that suggest new choreographies. Drawing inspiration from sources such as walking, games of tennis, commute patterns, Bollywood, news broadcasts, and other artists' work, Volla's investigations are then presented through animation, video, drawings, text, sound, or performance, or a combination thereof.
