Overlooked: New Jazz Recordings (Audio)

May 25, 2021

After the local news at noon, newly recorded music commonly described as ‘jazz’ in proper order: solos, duets, trios, quartets, and quintets — quite the opposite of Overlooked’s typically freewheeling, sonic-focused approach to listening. Host Rob Saffer generally eschews categories, genres, styles, and formats, but this broadcast diametrically breaks those rules. Musicians featured: Masbumi Kikuchi; Michael Formanek; Nik Bartsch; Satoki Fujii; Noah Preminger and Kim Cass; Wadada Leo Smith and Milford Graves; Bill Frisell and Skuli Sverrisson; Wadada Leo Smith and Bill Laswell; Hamid Drake and Irene Schweizer; Wadada Leo Smith and Bill Laswell and Milford Graves; Desertion Trio; Three Layer Cake; Anna Webber, John Hollenbeck, and Matt Mitchell; East Axis; Sons of Kemet; Blue Reality Quartet; Keshav Batish; Almog Sharvit; Tom Rainey’s Obbligato; and Ben Monder.

“Overlooked” is a show focusing on overlooked and under-heard jazz, improvisational, and other fringe music, from early roots to contemporary experiments, a mix of familiar to rare, classic to weird. Live from the shadow of Overlook Mountain in Ulster County.

Host Rob Saffer is the former Executive Director and Producer of the Creative Music Foundation.
