Overlooked: The Book Beri'Ah (Audio)

Oct 08, 2019
This broadcast airs just hours before the sunset arrival of Yom Kippur, the Jewish holy day of atonement. To get into the proper spiritual and musical mindset, host Rob Saffer will play music primarily from composer John Zorn’s third and final installment of 92 compositions for his Masada project, The Book Beri'Ah. Begun in 1993, Zorn has composed 613 pieces, one for each “mitzvot” (commandments) contained in the Torah. We’ll hear interpretations of Beri’Ah compositions by Sofia Rey, Gnostic Trio, Cleric, Abraxas, Julian Lage/Gyan Riley, Craig Taborn, Secret Chiefs 3 and many more of Zorn’s collaborators.

After the local news at noon, “Overlooked” is a show focusing on overlooked and under-heard jazz, improvisational, and other fringe music, from early roots to contemporary experiments, a mix of familiar to rare, classic to weird. Broadcast live from the Hudson studio.
