Everything Is Real Radio: Mary Jane Leach (Audio)

Nov 10, 2019

For this edition of Everything Is Real Radio, host Sam Sebren is joined in the studio by experimental classical composer/musician Mary Jane Leach. Mary Jane has been a pioneer of concepts in sound since the 70’s, working with peers including Arthur Russell, Ellen Fullman, Peter Zummo, and Philip Corner, and as a member of the legendary Downtown Ensemble. Her early compositions were with bass clarinet, voice, and tape and her most recent release on vinyl is "(f)lute songs” (Modern Love, 2018). Her work reveals a fascination with the physicality of sound, its acoustic properties and how they interact with space. Ms. Leach has performed around the world and she is also a teacher and author who devoted years to the preservation of Julius Eastman’s legacy. She is the co-editor with Renee Levine Packer of "Gay Guerilla: Julius Eastman and His Music" (University of Rochester Press, 2015), now available in paperback. Tune in for this special live conversation and selection of works by Mary Jane Leach.

Everything Is Real Radio features sounds across the sonic spectrum, blurring genres and focusing on under- and unrecognized artists working in experimental territories. The show includes interviews with guest composers and sometimes features live performances and collaborations. EIRR broadcasts every second Sunday from 6-8pm on WGXC 90.7-fm and wgxc.org
