Crystallization in a FitzRoy storm glass. This device was popularized by Admiral Robert Fitzroy, who also coined the term “weather forecast” and developed the telegraphic ancestor to the modern Shipping Forecast. Widely used in the nineteenth century, the device has been shown to lack the predictive powers attested to it - crystallization occurs as a result of temperature change, and nothing more.
