This episode of "The Radio Art Hour" - Gib Cassidy and David Moss, first aired on WGXC on Nov 16, 2024.

The Radio Art Hour aired on WGXC from January 2021 to February 2026.

On this episode of the Radio Art Hour, we will hear two works: Of Local (and Tropospheric) Interest (2024) by Gib Cassidy and Conjure (1993) by David Moss.

Of Local (and Tropospheric) Interest draws from over 200 hours of archival material from local, community, and hospital radio broadcasts recorded between 1979 and 1989 in rural Ireland. This decade culminated in the prohibition of unlicensed local radio stations. This work reflects elements of consumerism, religious discourse, and political debate, capturing the influence of Catholicism, the Northern Ireland conflict, global Cold War tensions, and the impact of Thatcherism from across the sea.

Gib Cassidy is a sound artist based in Dublin, Ireland. His background is in music. He has contributed drums, percussion, synthesizer programming and production to several records and has toured extensively across Europe in a number of bands. More recently, his practice has evolved toward sound design, field recording, and working with found sound, to create works for radio, moving image, and public spaces. He received an Arts Council of Ireland Agility Award in 2022.

Conjure is David Moss's second audio piece based on an Italo Calvino text. Conjure was first broadcast in 1993 and was co-commissioned by Harvestworks, Inc., the Wexner Center for the Visual Arts., and New American Radio.

Welcome to "The Radio Art Hour," a show where art is not just on the radio, but is the radio. "The Radio Art Hour" draws from the Wave Farm Broadcast Radio Art Archive, an online resource that aims to identify, coalesce, and celebrate historical and contemporary international radio artworks made by artists around the world, created specifically for terrestrial AM/FM broadcast, whether it be via commercial, public, community, or independent transmission. Come on a journey with us as radio artists explore broadcast radio space through poetic resuscitations and playful celebrations/subversions of the complex relationship between senders and receivers in this hour of radio about radio as an art form.

Tune in for selections from the WGXC archives featuring past broadcasts of programs that consisted of community talk, produced interviews, music, and/or radio art that were broadcast on Wave Farm's WGXC 90.7-FM.
