While studying acting in New York in the 1970s, Kevn Van Hentenryck became tuned into the ancient art of stone carving upon viewing Ken Russell's 1972 film, "The Savage Messiah." Nearly forty years later, he channels his passion and skill into the annual Hunter Stone Carving seminar, which is a free introductory seminar open to the general public. For two weeks every summer, students of all ages and skill levels join Van Hentenryck at his encampment on Route 23 to learn the tools and work on individual and collaborative sculpture projects. This year's seminar ran July 21 - Aug. 4, and the results can be viewed on Route 23 approaching Hunter.
