We celebrate the Oct. 15 birthday of Nigerian musician and activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti (1938-1997) with Part 12 of our ongoing "Afrobeat International" series, exploring the rich language of Afrobeat and its infinite dialects. The series features seminal artists of the genre as well as bands from the African continent and beyond who are carrying Fela's legacy forward in their own voice and style. In this broadcast we lean into the inextricable relationship between Afrobeat and Jazz, as interpreted by artists from Brazil, Cameroon, Chile, France, Germany, Haiti, Mexico, Nigeria, Portugal, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Togo, and right here in the U.S. of A. The theme of this year's Felabration – the annual week-long festival held at the New Africa Shrine in Lagos – is "Who Are You?", inspired by Fela's 1971 song, "Who're You". Building on the song's exploration of identity and authority, Felabration 2026 invites audiences to reflect on heritage, belonging, and the stories we carry with us. Everybody say "Yeah, yeah!"

Catskill resident "DJ Neva" is an ethnomusicologist, producer, and long-time cultural activist, specializing in music from the entire African continent, as well as the Caribbean and Latin America, the Maghreb and Middle East, and the Roma (Gypsy) diaspora. Formerly the producer of "Continental Drift" on WBAI-FM and New York International on Haitian community station Radio Soleil in NYC. The show is broadcast live from Catskill, NY.
