Attuning the erotics of cyberspace seems to me a demand for some sort of contact circuitry; the interface as a site of touch, the synthetic voice as a body that wants something, that calls for it through the hiss, a wet transmission. One of the beings that most drew my affection in Octavia Butler organisms was Chkahichdahk, the Oankali ship: a vast living organ, pulsing, transmitting, moving, its chimerical cells like molecules of the mother. In another frame I think of mitochondria, travelling along their own female lines. Mitochondrial DNA differs between individuals, but its mutations can be traced back to a common ancestor, a particular woman who happened to carry the particular mitochondria that found their way into every man and woman of the species. If she can be traced at all, she is already mid-line, in a sequence running back to Precambrian bacterial life and forward through vast swathes of human, organic, inorganic and newly synthesised molecular matter. This mix is a descent along that line.
