Since the early days of Nigeria's independence in 1960, police brutality and government corruption have been the subject of ongoing protest, often reflected in the songs of popular musicians. Most recently, Nigerians have taken to the streets in mass demonstrations with the call to disband SARS – the Special Anti-Robbery Squad created in 1992 to combat a spike in armed robbery incidents but which has since become a government-sanctioned rogue armed gang notorious for making arbitrary arrests, extortion, sexual assaults on women, and the extra-judicial killings of young people. One after the other, and sometimes even arm-in-arm, many of Nigeria's most popular recording artists are joining the movement to #EndSARS, making statements of solidarity through their music. In this broadcast, we feature the songs of today's protest movement, as well as some older songs that have maintained their relevance. Music for the Masses invites you on an excursion of sound and rhythm. Discover the music of established and emerging artists, both signed and unsigned, on the international music scene. Expect the unexpected. You might want to pack a map and a sandwich. For the avid globe-hopper and armchair traveler alike. Broadcast live from Catskill.
