A tribute to the singer-songwriter, Velvet Underground co-founder and lifetime rock avant-gardist John Cale, with selections from his many albums including his newest release, "Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood," plus audio excerpts from a recent interview conducted for emusic.com. Born in 1942, Cale was trained as a classical musician and came to the US in 1963 under the tutelage of composer Aaron Copland. In New York he worked with La Monte Young before cofoudning the Velvet Underground with Lou Reed in 1965. His many solo albums include "Vintage Violence" (1970), "Paris, 1919" (1973), "Helen of Troy" (1975), "Wrong Way Up" with Brian Eno (1990) and "Fragments of a Rainy Season" (1992). He produced landmark albums for the Stooges, Patti Smith, and the Modern Lovers, among others.
