This Radios in Motion pledge drive installment of “Overlooked” will focus on jazz record labels, their role in the development of the music and how each had their own sound, look and personality. Program host Rob Saffer and jazz archivist Marc Epstein will explore a variety of recording labels from early jazz through present day, highlighting recordings that best express each label’s feel. We’ll listen to recordings from major labels like Atlantic, Impulse, ECM and Blue Note, more obscure labels like Black Saint, Horo and BYG Actuel, and artist-owned labels like Debut, including a wide range of musicians such as Ornette Coleman, Mary Lou Williams, Sun Ra, John Coltrane, Yusuf Lateff, Thelonious Monk and many more.
