Special Harvest Extended Pledge Drive broadcast. On Thursday, October 26 at 7:00 PM, WGXC’s “Overlooked" will broadcast The Golden Record in its entirety. The newly-released three-LP box set is an authorized reproduction of an album that was printed on gold-plated copper disks and launched into space aboard the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft in 1977. Designed to teach extraterrestrials all they need to know about humans when they discover it, possibly billions of years from now, the records could be the only documentation of life on Earth after civilization ceases to exist. The Golden Record, created under the direction of noted astronomer Carl Sagan, features music from Bach and Beethoven to Blind Willie Johnson and Chuck Berry, Benin percussion to Solomon Island panpipes. Also included are various sounds of the earth as well as spoken greetings in dozens of languages. But since it was made 40 years ago, the record has gone mostly unheard. Join Overlooked host Rob Saffer and guest Lloyd Trufelman as they travel the spaceways powered by the sounds of The Golden Record.
