After receiving more than a half-million petition signatures – more than five times the number required to consider a debate to ban Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, from entering Great Britain – the British Parliament – a bastion of bourgeois democracy – held that debate on the annual birthday celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King. Often very contentious, the lively debate described Trump's comments about banning Muslims' entrance to the U.S. as hate speech, "poisonous", and labeled Trump as a "buffoon" and a "wazzock" – British slang for "a stupid or annoying person". However, the authority to ban someone from Great Britain – which has banned 84 people – rests with the home secretary, Theresa May, not with Parliament. The exchange gave British lawmakers an unusual chance to weigh in directly on U.S. politics, where Trump, meanwhile, has received the endorsement of White Supremacists and the Tea Party darling: her wazzockness, Sarah Palin. Here the Cutting Edge presents excerpts from the debate. Produced by Dred-Scott Keyes.
