Amy Arnsten, PhD has been working for over 2 decades researching the neurobiology of STRESS. She explores why stress changes our minds, making us lose the ability to think rationally and leading us to poor decision making. Today, we present a spirited interview after her presentation at this year’s Annual Society for Neuroscience meeting entitled Going To Hell In A Handbasket. Her research into the basic molecular mechanisms of behavior, thought, and emotion has led to new treatments for stress related disorders, including PTSD and substance abuse. She explains why innovative PTSD treatment now often includes two generic blood pressure medications: prazosin to reduce nightmares and flashbacks, and guanfacine to protect the brain from stress and lower drug cravings. Going to Hell In a Handbasket is her latest presentation in which she describes in detail the behind the scenes view of how stress can affect our ability to make good decisions. Join us this Sunday morning, 10/21/2012 at 11:00 am on WGXC as we present insights to emotions and the brain.
