Inspired by Warhol’s Factory, artist Francine Hunter McGivern founded Jungle Red Studios in 1977 in the then-desolate New York City neighborhood of Tribeca. Described by Michael Musto as “the ultra chic spot for witty beautification,” the space soon became known among members of the city’s avant-garde as a dynamic venue for exhibitions and performances. At the same time, under the nom d’arte of Jungle Red, Hunter McGivern developed her own experimental work in multimedia installation, theater, and performance.
