Inspired by Warhol’s Factory, artist Francine Hunter McGivern founded Jungle Red Studios in 1977 in the then-desolate New York City neighborhood of Tribeca. Described by Michael Musto as “the ultra chic spot for witty beautification,” the space soon became known among members of the city’s avant-garde as a dynamic venue for exhibitions and performances. At the same time, under the nom d’arte of Jungle Red, Hunter McGivern developed her own experimental work in multimedia installation, theater, and performance. Episodic Memory l 1977 – present is an expansive, 40 year survey of the artist’s work and features video, photography, drawings, paintings, three-dimensional installations, and ephemera from Jungle Red. Opening party.
