A week-long series of events to honor Greene County fire volunteers and the services they provide.The festivities begin Tuesday with the Ladies Auxiliary’s Annual Convention meeting at the Athens Fire Department, followed Wednesday evening with an annual dinner for the ladies at Pegasus Restaurant. The Greene County Volunteer Firemen’s Association Annual Convention Dinner, followed by a memorial and annual meeting, will be held Thursday at the Athens Fire Department. On Friday, the local fire departments will take part in a “Mardi Gras” parade through the village of Athens. This year’s theme is “Firefighting Circus — The Fun Side of Firefighting.” The parade units will line up at E.J. Arthur Elementary School in the village, and end at Riverfront Park. On Saturday, fire departments will take part in the annual dress parade in the village. The parade lineup will start at 1 p.m. on state Route 385 toward the north end of the village. The parade will step off at 2 p.m. and proceed down Route 385 to 2nd Street, then to South Vernon Street and 3rd Street. Trophies will be awarded after the parade.
