"The Man Who Planted Trees" is a 1987 Canadian animated film directed by Frederic Back. It is based on the story of the same name by Jean Giono. It tells the story of one shepard's long and successful single-handed effort to re-forest a desolate valley in the foothills of the Alps near Provence throughout the first half of the 20th century. According to the author, the goal was to make trees likable, or more specifically, make planting trees likable. It earned a number of awards including as Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.
