The Won Dharma Center invites the public to a special talk this Saturday, July 27th from 10:00am-11:30am during its regularly schedule dharma service. The speakers will be Ven. Chung Ohun Lee, Ph.D., Executive Director of UN and Interfaith Affairs of Won Buddhism International and Nancy Smith, Professor Emeritus, Psychology and Anthropology, Columbia-Greene Community College. Ms. Smith recently spent six months in the DMZ in South Korea working on a peace project. In 2011, she served six months in US Federal prison as a Prisoner of Conscience, protesting against the US Army School of Americas at Ft. Benning. From 1985-2000, she worked in international development for Oxfam UK, Save the Children UK and AFSC (American Quakers) in Africa, Somalia, Nepal, Kampuchea, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Ven. Lee recently returned from a trip to three countries in Asia in an effort to organize religious talks on peace in Korea between six nations. As part of this effort, she met with four representatives of North Korea in June and will organize a conference on Six Country Religious Talk on Peace and Reconciliation in Korea with senior religious leaders of the United States, China, Japan, Russia, North Korea and South Korea on 19-22 November, 2013 in Vienna during the 9th World Assembly of Religions for Peace. Ven. Lee serves as Co-President of Religions for Peace, the largest international interreligious organization, which has national chapters in 90 countries.
Ven. Lee will speak specifically about Won Buddhism teachings and its commitment to building peace through the explicit acceptance of other religions. Won Buddhism is a founding member of the Korean Conference of Religions for Peace and the International Peace Corps of Religions.
Both Ms. Smith and Ven. Lee will be available for Q&A and interviews following the dharma service.
