Music of the World

Oct 17, 2011: 7pm- 11:59 pm
Bard College

Lecture by Professor Peter Schoenbach, performance by Bard Gamelan Ensemble. Dr. Peter Schoenbach, Professor of Music at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, presents a lecture in Olin Hall at Bard College titled “ “Music of the World.” The renowned Bard Balinese Gong Kebyar Gamelan ensemble, Giri Meka, will also perform. Prof. Schoenbach (not to be confused with Dr. Peter Schickele of PDQ Bach fame), describes world music as “ what, after language, most binds a people together.” He will examine the role of music in a number of societies, with recorded examples; then turn the program over to the gamelan ensemble for its unique version of world music. The program, sponsored by the World Affairs Council of the Mid-Hudson Valley and the Bard College Department of Music, is free and open to the public.
