Our annual tour of Cedar Park Cemetery, led by Kelley Drahushuk of Spotty Dog Books & Ale, is in its eighth year. Kelley's talk at the library, Raising the Dead: Tales from Hudson's Crypts, was so popular we began this tour and it has become a much-loved yearly event. This year, in conjunction with our Hudson: A History of Whaling & Maritime Commerce exhibit, Kelley has added new graves of whaling captains, their wives and others.

"Playing Possum: How Animals Understand Death" by Susana Monso

All are invited to come and discuss themes of ecology and humanity’s relationship with nature with other book and nature lovers in our reading and hiking club! Each month we will go on a leisurely hike with stopping points for book discussion. Some months will have guest lecturers.

CLC hosts the fourth and final Town Hall related to the Countywide Conservation Plan!

This virtual program will include a presentation of results pulled from the hundreds of voices who weighed in on their priorities for conservation in Columbia County. Participants will learn about the results of the planning process, key priorities, and strategies and actions to accomplish the goals of the Plan.

You're invited to join Stewardship Coordinator Garrett Chisholm every Thursday to help tackle the invasive species that threaten the health of the Preserve. Volunteers will learn how to identify and manage a different invasive species every week.

Turn out on Thursday, October 23rd at 7pm Upstairs at the Avalon Lounge for the next edition of “Breaking the Algorithm IRL,” a new monthly series presented by Wave Farm’s WGXC 90.7-FM as part of our Local Waves initiative and the show "Local Waves in Conversation." Part conversation led by Mike Amari of Chosen Family and part DJ set by a WGXC volunteer, the series highlights local artists, musicians, venue owners and bookers, and record label owners. This month’s event features a discussion with Matthew O'Neill of non-profit and label Panther Mountain Sound as well as WGXC show "Panther Mountain Sound." DJ set by Yeshi of "NORMLRadio."

In our homeschool program, we lead children on a hands-on exploration of the Huyck Preserve's forests, streams, and ponds. This program focuses on building ecological understanding through observation, investigation, and documentation of our discoveries, while encouraging creativity through nature art and play.

Designed for homeschool families, children ages 5-12.

Caregivers may stay with the class but are not required to stay. Please indicate your plans on the registration form. Preschool siblings are also welcome if caregivers attend but must also be registered.

"We Will Not Be Composed" is a multimedia performance created in collaboration with saxophonist and composer Stevie Manning, author and activist Soraya Chemaly, and projection artist Xuan to challenge gendered perceptions of anger in America. Audience members simultaneously experience a live performance of a musical score by Manning featuring ondes Martenot, projections of light and texture from Xuan, and recorded voices of women and non-binary people expressing their experiences with and ideas about anger in immersive spatial audio. Whether these expressions of anger are startling, familiar, or provoking, audience members discover how collective recognition and expression of anger in the face of abusive power and domination can become a catalyst for justice and change.

Drawing from jazz, experimental improvised music, and chamber music, the instrumentation of We Will Not Be Composed features the recorded voices and a six-piece ensemble with Manning on alto saxophone, Jessica Ackerley on electric guitar, two cellists, double bass, and Suzanne Farrin on the ondes Martenot, which can sound like a surrealistic portrayal of a human voice.

From October 24–26, Bridge Street Theatre hosts the return of master magician Peter Samelson with his brand-new show Devils ’N Details. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 2:00pm. Hailed by the New York Times as “the soft-spoken conceptualist of sorcery,” Samelson combines laughter, wonder, and a little October eeriness in a performance that reveals the hidden devils lurking in everyday details.

Recently featured on Penn & Teller: Fool Us, Samelson has performed worldwide, co-founded NYC’s Monday Night Magic, and received the Merlin Award for Lifetime Achievement. October 25th, 2025, the FASNY Museum of Firefighting in Hudson, NY, from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm hosts the event: Trunk or Treat: Firefighter Edition! Attendees can collect treats, play fire safety Halloween-themed games, and vote for your favorite firetruck and trunk, as we celebrate another super spooky season at the Museum. Rain or shine!

Greetings, art lovers! This year ArtEast is celebrating its 20th year of presenting the ArtEast Open Studio Tour (that’s a lot of art!). This annual art event happens over two weekends: October 18-19 and October 25-26, 11:00am – 5:00pm each day during the most beautiful time of the year in the Hudson Valley. This year's participating artists include artists working across a diverse range of media and styles, with something to impress every visitor. You can see painters, sculptors, photographers, mixed-media, assemblage, woodworking, fiber, pottery – WHEW! That is a lot to see. Luckily studios are open for two weekends so if you run out of time the first weekend you’ve got the following weekend to see the ones you missed.

Another fun aspect to visiting the artists in their studios is you may come across the special treat of viewing live demonstrations by the artists of the techniques they use and apply to their works of art. What a great opportunity to really learn about the rich artistic environment of this area. Within each of these disciplines there is a depth of styles and expressions that each talented artist integrates into their artwork. In addition to being available to share their creative vision with art lovers, all of the artists will have original works of art on view.

This is a family-friendly, self-guided tour that takes you through the country roads of the Hudson Valley. Need a map and addresses of the artists? Learn how critters viewed as "creepy" by some (spiders, bats, snakes, crows, vultures, and more) play an important role in our ecosystem.
