The great classroom of the outdoors! In our homeschool program, we lead children on a hands-on exploration of the Huyck Preserve's forests, streams, and ponds. This program focuses on building ecological understanding through observation, investigation, and documentation of our discoveries, while encouraging creativity through nature art and play.

Designed for homeschool families, children ages 5-12. Caregivers may stay with the class but are not required to stay. It is asked that you indicate your plans on the registration form. Preschool siblings are also welcome if caregivers attend but must also be registered.

The CLC and The O Zone / Flower Power present this season’s final volunteer work party caring for the Pollinator Patch at Greenport!

This volunteer work party will involve replanting the patch with native species that will help local pollinators thrive. Volunteers will leave with new skills related to native plant landscaping and small-scale land management.

We can’t wait to welcome volunteers back to the pollinator patch this spring to see all of the changes and new insects! All are welcome at this fun, friendly volunteer event.

On Saturday, October 12th, a unique ensemble meets an equally unique venue. Enter the splendor of The Widow Jane Mine with Dzieci Theatre, where their riotous clan from the “Old Country” will greet you with song, dance, and divination, then lead you between the gargantuan stone pillars and around the subterranean pools, in a riotous whirlwind of theatrical invention.

Dzieci’s Makbet (their bold take on Macbeth), comes alive through the performance of a handful of actors who take turns spontaneously trading off parts at the drop of a hat, exploring the art of storytelling, and creating a one-of-a-kind experience.

Malang Jobarteh is a Kora player from Gambia, Africa, now residing in New York, where he is a popular performer and instructor and has played with numerous musicians such as Boubacar Diebate, Bela Fleck, and Dialy Kounda. A Kora is a 21-string harp-like instrument traditionally made from a large gourd and wooden neck, and has historically been used in storytelling. Malang will sing, play, and share stories about his heritage, bringing a celebration of his homeland’s music to the library.

Curious magazine & gift shop in Midtown Kingston hosts a happy hour with Lee Clay Johnson, who will read from his new novel, Bloodline. Johnson was born and raised around Nashville, Tennessee, in a family of bluegrass musicians. His novel Nitro Mountain won the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction from the American Academy of Arts & Letters. Bloodline was published this summer as the inaugural release of the new Panamerica Books imprint, edited by Gary Fisketjon of Knopf, Random House and most recently the literary broadsheet County Highway. Light refreshments starting at 6:30pm, reading and book signing at 7.

Greetings, art lovers! This year ArtEast is celebrating its 20th year of presenting the ArtEast Open Studio Tour (that’s a lot of art!). This annual art event happens over two weekends: October 18-19 and October 25-26, 11:00am – 5:00pm each day during the most beautiful time of the year in the Hudson Valley. This year's participating artists include artists working across a diverse range of media and styles, with something to impress every visitor. You can see painters, sculptors, photographers, mixed-media, assemblage, woodworking, fiber, pottery – WHEW! That is a lot to see. Luckily studios are open for two weekends so if you run out of time the first weekend you’ve got the following weekend to see the ones you missed.

Another fun aspect to visiting the artists in their studios is you may come across the special treat of viewing live demonstrations by the artists of the techniques they use and apply to their works of art. What a great opportunity to really learn about the rich artistic environment of this area. Within each of these disciplines there is a depth of styles and expressions that each talented artist integrates into their artwork. In addition to being available to share their creative vision with art lovers, all of the artists will have original works of art on view.

This is a family-friendly, self-guided tour that takes you through the country roads of the Hudson Valley. Need a map and addresses of the artists? On October 18, communities across the country will mobilize for our next priority national day of action – also called “No Kings” – to respond to the Trump administration’s escalating abuse of power, from military troops deployed in our communities, to fast-tracked deportations of immigrant families without due process, students and faculty detained for their speech, and threats to free and fair elections. Join the NYCLU as we march with thousands for a powerful demonstration of collective resistance. Anyone can use the RSVP link to sign up and join the NYCLU marching contingent in Albany.

Our annual tour of Cedar Park Cemetery, led by Kelley Drahushuk of Spotty Dog Books & Ale, is in its eighth year. Kelley's talk at the library, Raising the Dead: Tales from Hudson's Crypts, was so popular we began this tour and it has become a much-loved yearly event. This year, in conjunction with our Hudson: A History of Whaling & Maritime Commerce exhibit, Kelley has added new graves of whaling captains, their wives and others.

Turn out on Thursday, October 23rd at 7pm Upstairs at the Avalon Lounge for the next edition of “Breaking the Algorithm IRL,” a new monthly series presented by Wave Farm’s WGXC 90.7-FM as part of our Local Waves initiative and the show "Local Waves in Conversation." Part conversation led by Mike Amari of Chosen Family and part DJ set by a WGXC volunteer, the series highlights local artists, musicians, venue owners and bookers, and record label owners. This month’s event features a discussion with Matthew O'Neill of non-profit and label Panther Mountain Sound as well as WGXC show "Panther Mountain Sound." DJ set by Yeshi of "NORMLRadio."

"We Will Not Be Composed" is a multimedia performance created in collaboration with saxophonist and composer Stevie Manning, author and activist Soraya Chemaly, and projection artist Xuan to challenge gendered perceptions of anger in America. Audience members simultaneously experience a live performance of a musical score by Manning featuring ondes Martenot, projections of light and texture from Xuan, and recorded voices of women and non-binary people expressing their experiences with and ideas about anger in immersive spatial audio. Whether these expressions of anger are startling, familiar, or provoking, audience members discover how collective recognition and expression of anger in the face of abusive power and domination can become a catalyst for justice and change.

Drawing from jazz, experimental improvised music, and chamber music, the instrumentation of We Will Not Be Composed features the recorded voices and a six-piece ensemble with Manning on alto saxophone, Jessica Ackerley on electric guitar, two cellists, double bass, and Suzanne Farrin on the ondes Martenot, which can sound like a surrealistic portrayal of a human voice.

The 25th Annual Ghostly Gallop! The 5K course is certified and takes runners and walkers of all ages through Hudson, past the Hudson Area Library, and back to the Jr./Sr. High School. The Kids Fun Run is open to all little ones, ages 12 and under. This year’s Ghostly Gallop will also include a costume contest for kids, plus prizes for top finishers. An antidote to the seasonal blues, we'll gather to taste and learn about "true teas" from China, Taiwan and Vietnam brewed properly and informally in the gongfu style. All teas are ethically sourced and sustainably grown or wild harvested. Bryan Zimmerman is a Columbia-County-based artist and educator who takes an ecumenical approach to materials and processes. He has made tea a daily part of his life for 30 years.

February 6, 2025: Basic Audio Concepts 

Session objectives include an overview of common and useful terms related to acoustic, electronic, and digital ecologies, with a technical focus on audio transduction and microphone varieties. Additional topics for discussion include psychoacoustics—the branch of science studying the psychological responses associated with sound—with a focus on physical spatial considerations and panning/width in recording.

March 6, 2025: Filters

Session objectives include an introduction to common concepts related to filters in audio production, including frequency response, polar pattern, and equalization. Participants will also learn about The Fletcher Munson Curve, frequency masking, and infrasound, and how to apply these concepts to your work. We will also consider recording height and how to address unwanted plosives and sibilance.

April 3, 2025: Considering Loudness when Recording

Session objectives include strategies for achieving desired “depth” in your recordings. Topics include gain staging, dynamic range, compression, and the concept of distance in recording, including reverb and distortion.

May 1, 2025: Editing Bootcamp

Editing bootcamp! We will cover hotkeys, fades, matching takes, punching in/out, layering tracks, and bus processing. Participants will learn shortcuts for quicker and better edits, as well as bulk import/export strategies.

June 5, 2025: Creative processing

Session objectives include strategies for creating your own audio effects (FX). Topics include delays, filters, autopan, and time stretching. Participants will learn about sequences FX and FX automation in order to achieve the sounds you are imagining.

July 3, 2025: Multitrack Mixing

Session objectives include strategies for mixing multitrack sessions for full height, width, and depth without murkiness. The goal of this session is to understand how to make multiple tracks fit together in a mix. Attendees will participate in critical listening for frequency range, dynamics, and headroom.

August 7, 2025: The Physical Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include an overview of crucial care and maintenance of recording equipment to ensure longevity of your tools, including a hands-on introduction to soldering and light electronic repairs.

September 4, 2025: The Intangible Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include discussions about analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion and digital audio processing. Specific topics will include block size, sample rate, bit depth, compression, streaming, and physical media. Additional topics include how best to manage computer resources in large sessions, latency for high track count, and CPU intensive processing.

October 2, 2025: Understanding Monitoring Sources and Taking it to the Stage

Session objectives include a conceptual overview of possible monitoring sources: speakers, headphones, and subwoofers, as well as the impacts of the space or room on your recording quality. Additional topics will include techniques for recording live performance, including ringing out microphones, PA system safety, microphone techniques, and streaming.

November 6, 2025: Taking It to the Field

Session objectives include field recording tools, principles, refinement, and processing.

Jen Kutler is a multidisciplinary artist and Technical Director of Wave Farm. Kutler modifies found objects that are cultural signifiers of power, gender, queerness, and intimacy to create atypical instruments and sculptures. Her performances feature many of her instruments incorporated with immersive field recordings to explore common and discrepant experiences of familiar social tones in immersive sound and media environments. In our homeschool program, we lead children on a hands-on exploration of the Huyck Preserve's forests, streams, and ponds. This program focuses on building ecological understanding through observation, investigation, and documentation of our discoveries, while encouraging creativity through nature art and play.

Designed for homeschool families, children ages 5-12.
Caregivers may stay with the class but are not required to stay. Please indicate your plans on the registration form.
Preschool siblings are also welcome if caregivers attend but must also be registered.

Ranger Rachel hosts a family-friendly walk along Lake Trail East. During the walk, Rachel will discuss the importance of woodpeckers, the different woodpeckers that live at the Preserve and how to identify them. We will look for signs of woodpecker activity along the trail.

Killing the Messengers: Israel’s Attacks on Palestinian Journalists, and U.S. Complicity

Screening of the Al Jazeera documentary film The Killing of Shireen Abu Akleh (2022), which tells the story and unravels the mystery of the shooting death of Palestine’s most beloved journalist. Following that and two additional short films focusing on the situation of journalists in Gaza, there will be a discussion with independent journalists Kavitha Chekuru, the director of The Killing of Shireen Abu Akleh, and Shahd Safi, a free-lance journalist who grew up in Gaza. Chekuru has received the Peabody award, the George Polk award, and seven News and Documentary Emmy nominations, producing, directing, and reporting for 30 documentaries focusing on human rights and justice across the globe. Safi has contributed to various media outlets, focusing on human rights and the impact of the Gaza genocide on the Palestinian people.

Jonathan Osofsky, owner and creative director of Kasuri, will share his passion for the artist’s approach to fashion, with a focus on DIY and upcycled garment production during this presentation. Did you know that there are more apple varieties in New York than any other state? Rebecca Echevarria, Hudson Valley food preserver and artist, hosts a workshop at Wayside Cider on Sunday, November 16th at 3-4pm about preserving apples by fermenting, drying and freezing. Particular recipes using each method will also be highlighted. A tasting of a small selection of custom apple preserves and an apple preservation handout are included. Participants will make an apple cheong, or a Korean fermented fruit syrup, from a diverse selection of apple varieties and receive a fermentation weight to care for their cheong at home. Curious magazine & gift shop at 352 Broadway in Midtown Kingston will host a local history event on Sunday, November 16th at 7pm. Kingston-based writer and filmmaker Lynn Woods will screen her documentary "Lost Rondout: A Story of Urban Renewal" followed by an informal Q&A and discussion.

In the late 1960s, more than half of the waterfront commercial district of Kingston, NY, was demolished in an ill-conceived urban renewal project: a tragedy repeated in countless working-class neighborhoods across the country. A film by Stephen Blauweiss & Lynn Woods, "Lost Roundout" tells that story through more than 40 interviews and hundreds of photographs.

Tom O’Dowd will teach participants to identify trees during winter by their twigs, buds, bark, and even smell.

What to expect: We will walk up to two miles along Hickory Lane, the Dogwood Trail, and the Meadow Connector. These trails are forested, packed earth with some exposed roots. We will be stopping often to discuss the trees we see. Bench seating is available along the trail. A season finale of the monthly ambient music series known as "Sunday Night Swim" at The Avalon Lounge in Catskill, NY.

This show will close out the year for the series, with a trio of musicians, Matthew O'Neill, Rebecca Borrer, and Sam Calder, all playing a round-robin collaborative set. They will be playing alone and together in an immersive, slowly morphing sound bed. A chill night for those who need some space or some exploration. Chairs and floor blankets will be available.

Bridge Street Theatre presents Electric Parlor Music, a one-night performance by Catskill-based multimedia artist Brian Dewan. The evening features original songs that function as poetic stories, accompanied by electric zither, autoharp, and accordion, blending humor, curiosity, and heartfelt storytelling. Subjects range from outsiders and UFOs to records, longing, and the odd corners of everyday life. The program also includes a screening of Dewan’s handcrafted filmstrip The Tide Waits For No Man. Dewan has presented his work at major institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the New Museum, and the Museum of Jurassic Technology. No strobe lights will be used during the performance.

Back by popular demand! Local artist Becca Van K will show tweens and teens (ages 9-18) will learn how to make a myriad of bead creations: melty bead mosaics, necklaces, bracelets, and more! Supplies included, no experience necessary.

Becca Van K is a mixed-media fiber artist based in Greene County. She has exhibited widely in the Hudson Valley and Capital Regions, and firmly believes in art as a conduit for community support/engagement.
