We are so very excited to welcome Dr. Chuck Ver Straeten, geologist from New York State Museum, for Rock Talk: The Catskills, About 385 Million Years Ago on Sunday, February 2 at 4pm. The presentation it is free and open to the public!

Rocks and fossils of the Catskills tell us about lands in New York long before dinosaurs. Andes-scale mountains along today’s Appalachians, rivers carrying mud and sand into New York and beyond. Earth’s oldest forests were scattered across eastern New York then, with primitive plants and animals.

For about 100 years, Earth’s oldest known fossil forest was at Gilboa. Discovered in 2009, the older Cairo Fossil Forest provides new views of these forests – root impressions of large trees, showing where each tree stood in a New York forest about 385 million years ago.

February 6, 2025: Basic Audio Concepts 

Session objectives include an overview of common and useful terms related to acoustic, electronic, and digital ecologies, with a technical focus on audio transduction and microphone varieties. Additional topics for discussion include psychoacoustics—the branch of science studying the psychological responses associated with sound—with a focus on physical spatial considerations and panning/width in recording.

March 6, 2025: Filters

Session objectives include an introduction to common concepts related to filters in audio production, including frequency response, polar pattern, and equalization. Participants will also learn about The Fletcher Munson Curve, frequency masking, and infrasound, and how to apply these concepts to your work. We will also consider recording height and how to address unwanted plosives and sibilance.

April 3, 2025: Considering Loudness when Recording

Session objectives include strategies for achieving desired “depth” in your recordings. Topics include gain staging, dynamic range, compression, and the concept of distance in recording, including reverb and distortion.

May 1, 2025: Editing Bootcamp

Editing bootcamp! We will cover hotkeys, fades, matching takes, punching in/out, layering tracks, and bus processing. Participants will learn shortcuts for quicker and better edits, as well as bulk import/export strategies.

June 5, 2025: Creative processing

Session objectives include strategies for creating your own audio effects (FX). Topics include delays, filters, autopan, and time stretching. Participants will learn about sequences FX and FX automation in order to achieve the sounds you are imagining.

July 3, 2025: Multitrack Mixing

Session objectives include strategies for mixing multitrack sessions for full height, width, and depth without murkiness. The goal of this session is to understand how to make multiple tracks fit together in a mix. Attendees will participate in critical listening for frequency range, dynamics, and headroom.

August 7, 2025: The Physical Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include an overview of crucial care and maintenance of recording equipment to ensure longevity of your tools, including a hands-on introduction to soldering and light electronic repairs.

September 4, 2025: The Intangible Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include discussions about analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion and digital audio processing. Specific topics will include block size, sample rate, bit depth, compression, streaming, and physical media. Additional topics include how best to manage computer resources in large sessions, latency for high track count, and CPU intensive processing.

October 2, 2025: Understanding Monitoring Sources and Taking it to the Stage

Session objectives include a conceptual overview of possible monitoring sources: speakers, headphones, and subwoofers, as well as the impacts of the space or room on your recording quality. Additional topics will include techniques for recording live performance, including ringing out microphones, PA system safety, microphone techniques, and streaming.

November 6, 2025: Taking It to the Field

Session objectives include field recording tools, principles, refinement, and processing.

Jen Kutler is a multidisciplinary artist and Technical Director of Wave Farm. Kutler modifies found objects that are cultural signifiers of power, gender, queerness, and intimacy to create atypical instruments and sculptures. Her performances feature many of her instruments incorporated with immersive field recordings to explore common and discrepant experiences of familiar social tones in immersive sound and media environments. The Mountain Top Historical Society of Greene County invites you to join us for “Harlem Hell Fighters from the North Country” presented by Richard Walling. This event will take place via Zoom, Thursday, February 6th, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM.

This is a virtual Zoom presentation. Registration is required to receive a link via email to attend. All are welcome. Local men of the Harlem Hell Fighters, the well-known regiment of the American Army during World War 1 will be featured in the program on February 6th. Unit historian, Richard Sears Walling, will explore the service of the regiment with an emphasis on the dozens of men of our region who served in this famous regiment.

In addition to better-known heroes such as Sgt. Henry Johnson of Albany, there were men of our area including Sgt. Carl and Harrison Vroman of Schoharie, and James Jamieson of Saratoga Springs. The regiment went overseas in 1917 with an original complement of 2200 men and 76 officers and returned with 1200 men and 35 officers in 1919 of that group. Their heroism in France earned them their immortal nickname, the Harlem Hell Fighters.

Walling's work specializes in African American and Native American history and genealogy. He is the recipient of the Oliver Cromwell Black Historical Society and the Sons of the American Revolution. He resides in Stamford.

Over our six classes, you will learn and practice 10 ancient movements with a certified instructor in the lineage of Grand Master Nan Lu. Qi is your life-force, your energy, and these 10 movements will help improve Qi flow, balance, flexibility, and overall wellness. What makes our classes different from most is that you also will learn about the Five Element Framework, how you can add to your Qi, and how you can stop draining your Qi on your journey to self-healing. This work can help address chronic pain and joint stiffness, poor digestion, weight loss, headaches, stress and anxiety, sleep disorders, arthritis, and overall fatigue.

Just signed up to volunteer? Been volunteering for awhile, but want to say hello to some new faces? You can join the Columbia Land Conservancy for volunteer orientation! At this virtual meeting, you’ll have the opportunity to meet volunteer coordinators, ask questions, and get to know your fellow volunteers.

Between 1906 and 1913, New York City built the Ashokan Reservoir, one of the era’s the largest handmade public works. Using eminent domain, pack mules and dynamite, the city totally altered the region’s profile, buying up and razing eleven Catskill hamlets, relocating thousands, and eventually exhuming 2,700 graves. “It was one of the most gruesomest interesting jobs I’ve ever worked on,” one teamster recalled. Today the reservoir provides around 40% of New York City’s drinking water, and raises questions still about the relationship between NYC and the Hudson Valley, what it means to share natural resources, and the cost of progress.

On February 13 at 8 p.m. and The Avalon Lounge, The Moral Panic Variety Hour plumbs the various depths of the reservoir: Though silent films; an interview with local author and historian Frank Almquist; music from Will Lawrence; a live reenactment of the severe thunderstorm that first flooded the reservoir in November 1914, with soundscapes by musician / writer Ben Seretan; and a rare performance from The Dead Cowboys, a group of restless musical spirits who reside at the bottom of the watery pit itself.

You're invited to contribute to community science and learn new birding skills during the Great Backyard Bird Count!

Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count was the first online community science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real-time. Now, more than 160,000 people worldwide join the four-day count each February to create an annual snapshot of the distribution and abundance of birds.

Led by experienced birder Frank Smith and the Alan Devoe Bird Club, we will collect population data about the birds seen at Ooms in Chatham.

The Hudson Area Library hosts a book reading and signing of "Their Names Are Mine" by poet and performer Rajnii Eddins. Originally from Seattle, Washington, Rajnii has been engaging diverse community audiences for over 30 years as a Spoken Word Poet/Emcee and Teaching Artist. No registration required.

Community Conversations is an opportunity to join local experts and community members virtually. This program series addresses important issues, from affordable farmland to Indigenous land stewardship and their connection to conservation. One-hour Zoom sessions will include brief presentations, time for questions and answers, and the opportunity to connect with others.

This month, we will explore how libraries and conservation efforts support each other!

Mandy Babirad, Assistant Director and Children’s Librarian at the Kinderhook Memorial Library, will be joined by Jenifer Rosete, Conservation Education Coordinator at CLC, to discuss collaborative efforts to get people of all ages outdoors. Babirad will highlight upcoming and past nature-themed activities at the library, like this past summer reading program that encouraged young visitors to visit all ten CLC properties. Rosete will then share ways to explore nature with your local library using CLC resources like Nature Explorer Backpacks and Nature Quest!

These casual monthly in-person meet-ups at the Hudson Area Library will provide you with an opportunity to practice speaking conversational Spanish, facilitated by our instructor Sonia Cintron. All skill levels are welcome!

Julia Bacha’s documentary film "Boycott" (2021) traces the impact of state legislation which penalizes individuals and companies that boycott Israel in response to its illegal occupation of Palestine and decades-long abuse of Palestinian human rights. A group exhibition of over 70 women artists now on view in CREATE’s 1st & 2nd floor gallery in celebration of women’s history month. On Saturday, Feb. 22 from 2-4pm, several featured artists will discuss their work in the show during this Artist's Talk!

In his over 40 year career, guitarist Marc Ribot has created iconic music with the likes of Tom Waits, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Elvis Costello, and many more. For his Hudson Hall debut, Ribot reunites with drummer Chad Taylor to continue the Albert Ayler-tinged trajectory they begun in the early aughts with their band Spiritual Unity and then the Grimes Taylor Ribot Trio, this time with the added talents of former Soul Coughing bassist Sebastian Steinberg and the fearless guitarist/improvisator Ava Mendoza (Unnatural Ways, The Violent Femmes, tUnE-yArDs).

Starting Thursday, February 13th, we will be holding our six-week Dragon's Way Qigong class for Spring in Chatham, NY.

Over our six classes, you will learn and practice 10 ancient movements with a certified instructor in the lineage of Grand Master Nan Lu. Qi is your life-force, your energy, and these 10 movements will help improve Qi flow, balance, flexibility, and overall wellness. What makes our classes different from most is that you also will learn about the Five Element Framework, how you can add to your Qi, and how you can stop draining your Qi on your journey to self-healing. This work can help address chronic pain and joint stiffness, poor digestion, weight loss, headaches, stress and anxiety, sleep disorders, arthritis, and overall fatigue.

Representatives of the next generation of classical musicians, the internationally celebrated French string quartet and American harpist bring their sense of discovery to classic works of the belle époque and to the music of today.

To celebrate the launch of a new website dedicated to the Black Legacy Association of Columbia County (BLACC) collection of oral histories, the Hudson Area Library will host a virtual panel discussion of the collection with Quintin Cross (Hudson/Catskill Housing Coalition) and Tiffany Garriga (Black Entrepreneur Market). The BLACC collection is an archive of local oral histories, videos, images, and documents from the 1980s, donated to the library by Columbia Opportunities, Inc. in 2018. They are now organized, digitized, archived, and made accessible on a brand new website.

February 6, 2025: Basic Audio Concepts 

Session objectives include an overview of common and useful terms related to acoustic, electronic, and digital ecologies, with a technical focus on audio transduction and microphone varieties. Additional topics for discussion include psychoacoustics—the branch of science studying the psychological responses associated with sound—with a focus on physical spatial considerations and panning/width in recording.

March 6, 2025: Filters

Session objectives include an introduction to common concepts related to filters in audio production, including frequency response, polar pattern, and equalization. Participants will also learn about The Fletcher Munson Curve, frequency masking, and infrasound, and how to apply these concepts to your work. We will also consider recording height and how to address unwanted plosives and sibilance.

April 3, 2025: Considering Loudness when Recording

Session objectives include strategies for achieving desired “depth” in your recordings. Topics include gain staging, dynamic range, compression, and the concept of distance in recording, including reverb and distortion.

May 1, 2025: Editing Bootcamp

Editing bootcamp! We will cover hotkeys, fades, matching takes, punching in/out, layering tracks, and bus processing. Participants will learn shortcuts for quicker and better edits, as well as bulk import/export strategies.

June 5, 2025: Creative processing

Session objectives include strategies for creating your own audio effects (FX). Topics include delays, filters, autopan, and time stretching. Participants will learn about sequences FX and FX automation in order to achieve the sounds you are imagining.

July 3, 2025: Multitrack Mixing

Session objectives include strategies for mixing multitrack sessions for full height, width, and depth without murkiness. The goal of this session is to understand how to make multiple tracks fit together in a mix. Attendees will participate in critical listening for frequency range, dynamics, and headroom.

August 7, 2025: The Physical Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include an overview of crucial care and maintenance of recording equipment to ensure longevity of your tools, including a hands-on introduction to soldering and light electronic repairs.

September 4, 2025: The Intangible Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include discussions about analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion and digital audio processing. Specific topics will include block size, sample rate, bit depth, compression, streaming, and physical media. Additional topics include how best to manage computer resources in large sessions, latency for high track count, and CPU intensive processing.

October 2, 2025: Understanding Monitoring Sources and Taking it to the Stage

Session objectives include a conceptual overview of possible monitoring sources: speakers, headphones, and subwoofers, as well as the impacts of the space or room on your recording quality. Additional topics will include techniques for recording live performance, including ringing out microphones, PA system safety, microphone techniques, and streaming.

November 6, 2025: Taking It to the Field

Session objectives include field recording tools, principles, refinement, and processing.

Jen Kutler is a multidisciplinary artist and Technical Director of Wave Farm. Kutler modifies found objects that are cultural signifiers of power, gender, queerness, and intimacy to create atypical instruments and sculptures. Her performances feature many of her instruments incorporated with immersive field recordings to explore common and discrepant experiences of familiar social tones in immersive sound and media environments. Susan Eley Fine Art presents "dismantle" at its Upstate location in Hudson, NY. Organized by Liz Lorenz, Assistant Director of SEFA—the exhibition includes four artists: Ana Maria Farina, Susan Lisbin, Maria Manhattan, and Marianne van Lent. Their works range from sculpture, to painting, to textile. The featured artists are currently living and working around the Upstate New York region.

"dismantle" is on view from March 6-April 27, 2025. Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, March 8th from 4-6PM. Many of the artists will be present with us to discuss their works at the event which coincides with International Women’s Day!

The exhibition was conceived by curator Liz Lorenz’s belief in the power of dismantling to rebuild. In the featured artworks, the techniques of dissecting, highlighting and redefining reveal the struggles, potentials and powers of the corporeal realm. This concept is especially pertinent in relation to the female body at this time. Thus, SEFA is honored to present the work of four artists who zoom in to and abstract our physical realities—cherishing their multifaceted natures while fostering aesthetic experiences.

Ana Maria Farina’s textile works from her “histérica” series attempt to uncover what lies beneath, using her medium to “paint with a gun” and redefine the term hysteria that has been weaponized against certain groups. Susan Lisbin’s ceramic “Lips” hang on the walls in dynamic conversations, simultaneously isolating a single body part and illustrating the energetic conversations we can have together. Maria Manhattan’s porcelain busts are adorned with crowns of China shards and others pierced with arrows, evoking both honor and suffering. Marianne van Lent’s mixed media paintings from her “Biological Anthropology” series meld cellular forms, organic shapes and ancient mythology to craft abstracted stories about complexities of our contemporary bodies.

Dr. Tara Rodgers (Analog Tara) is a multi-instrumentalist composer, sound engineer, and historian of electronic music. She is the author of Pink Noises: Women on Electronic Music and Sound (2010) and numerous essays on the history of sound and synthesizers.

Premiere performance of “life of the mother,” a new ambient electronic music album imagining the depth, expansiveness, complexity, and power that this phrase holds. From the sounds of a vintage ARP 2500 and modern noise synths run through a DJ mixer, to algorithmic percolations of analog synths, the music blends emergent systems, improvisation, and intention into a complex and dynamic whole. The fourth annual sourdough bread-baking competition at Dewey Hall on Friday, March 14th! Local home bakers will showcase their skills, offering a fun culinary experience for all. Sourdough bread, dating back 14,000 years, is made with a traditional starter, making a comeback in home baking. Bakers will submit two full loaves: one for tasting and one for raffle. Attendees can sample the loaves and enjoy cheese boards, wine, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks. Raffle tickets (cash only) will offer chances to win loaves and other prizes. Judges include experts from Bizalion's Fine Foods, Berkshire Mountain Bakery, and Found Bread, while live music by the Michael Junkins Duo adds to the atmosphere. This event, supported by local businesses, is organized by Evelyn Battaglia and Sherri Gorelick. All proceeds benefit Dewey Hall, a historic venue founded in 1887 by The Sheffield Friendly Union.

Multi-instrumentalist composer and electronic music historian Tara Rodgers produces a retrospective concert of selected works from the past 20 years, diffused in an immersive 4.1 sound system.

This event requires everyone to wear a mask in the venue.⁣ Masks will be available on entry.⁣

Rodgers’s research and music explore electronic sound as material and metaphor, with studio practice as a hands-on parallel to study of the long history of electronic music and sound.

The concert juxtaposes her wide-ranging work across styles and methods, from generative computer music written in SuperCollider, to electroacoustic compositions featuring piano improvisation, to pulsing ambient and techno tracks.

As a historian and multidisciplinary scholar, Rodgers has also published essays in foundational volumes in contemporary studies of music, sound, technology, and culture. Her book Pink Noises: Women on Electronic Music and Sound (Duke University Press, 2010) brings together twenty-four interviews with women in electronic music and sound cultures who expand notions of who and what counts in matters of invention, production, and noise-making.

After the concert, Rodgers is joined by Rensselaer Arts graduate student and renowned DJ Rekha Malhotra, along with Director of the Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer Stephanie Loveless for an onstage conversation and Q&A.

CLC and the Chatham Public Library are teaming up for a monthly walking club on public lands! Together, we will enjoy fresh air, friends, and fun as we explore the trails at High Falls this month.

What to expect: We will walk one mile along the Waterfall Way trail, which features a forested path with packed earth, bog bridges, exposed roots, and a maximum grade of 15%. There are seating opportunities alongside the trail; more details can be found here. Please note that this event will still occur in light rain or snow, but registrants will be contacted in extreme weather.

What to bring: We recommend water and weather-appropriate clothing and footwear. Social, leashed dogs are welcomed with bags for waste!

When his musical YANK! was successfully produced down in Rio de Janeiro, David Zellnik found himself part of a passionate community of theatre makers including George, the show’s vibrant 26-year-old producer. Two years later, George was dead – of a mysterious “sudden bacterial infection”. David returns to Brazil for his memorial, but the more he digs into George’s personal life, the more he’s forced to wrestle with his own feelings and fears and the real source of his desire to understand George’s life and death. Columbia and Greene Counties – Spring Gardening Day will take place on two Saturdays in March! March 22 at the Extension Education Center in Hudson and March 29 at the Agroforestry Resource Center in Acra. Each day will feature four educational workshops led by knowledgeable Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs). They will cover a variety of gardening topics designed to inspire and inform. Participants will also enjoy a light breakfast and the opportunity to shop at the Master Gardeners Marketplace. The marketplace will offer gently used books, gardening tools, and plant cuttings.

“Spring Gardening Day is all about fostering a love of gardening and building a stronger connection to the natural world,” said Xandra Powers, Community Horticulture Coordinator. “Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, this event offers something for everyone, from expert-led workshops to unique finds at the marketplace.”

This year’s workshops include an engaging mixture of topics:

Guest speakers will be Riham Barghouti, a founding member of the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI), and a longtime organizer for Palestinian rights in NYC; and Rebecca Vilkomerson, the Executive Director of the national organization Jewish Voice for Peace from 2009 - 2019, and co-author of the new book, "Solidarity Is the Political Version of Love." Barghouti and Vilkomerson will share information about the origins, principles, and strategy of the BDS movement, as well as practical examples of effective BDS campaigns. Local organizers will discuss the Break the Bonds New York State (BTBNYS) campaign. Discussion will follow.

Chronogram Conversations: The State of Cannabis in New York is an evening of discussion and networking on March 26 at the Fuller Building in Kingston. This panel discussion—part of our Chronogram Conversations series—will bring together dispensary owners, cannabis farmers, and industry experts to explore the victories, setbacks, and future of legal cannabis in the state.

In addition to the panel, local cannabis businesses and advocacy organizations will be on hand to share resources and insight. New Zealand-born pop artist Kimbra is a songwriter, musician, producer, and performer currently based in NYC. In 2011, she debuted her first album, "Vows, Bowed" as well as a duet with Gotye on the song "Somebody I Used To Know". She released her most recent album, "Primal Heart", last year.

Born in Santa Cruz, California, into a family of artists, Kendra McKinley has been immersed in a spectrum of performance mediums from a young age. Her most recent LP, "WHERE DOES A BODY BEGIN?", released in 2023 and her upcoming EP "music for smoking weed with your bra off" is entirely performed and produced by McKinley. She is currently based in New York's Hudson Valley
