The Huyk Preserve and Biological Research Station is putting on a Bittersweet Cutting event to give participants an opportunity to give back to the planet on Earth Day. Stewardship Coordinator Garrett Chisholm will lead the group to cut back the invasive Asiatic bittersweet vine that threatens the health of our forests. Wearing long pants and sleeves and sturdy shoes is recommended. Work gloves and a limited number of loppers are available to borrow, or participants can bring their own.

This is open to the public, and registration is not required but is helpful in planning this event.

The FASNY Museum of Firefighting is hosting "Mini Horse Mania!" Attendees can visit the “adoption barn” to learn all about how firefighters cared for fire horses. Then, they can pick their own stuffed horse to adopt and call their own, Finally, all kids will have the opportunity to meet our guests: mini horses from Little Brook Farm.

The event is open to all.

Monarda Community Care is offering an open drop-in care clinic at the Hudson Area Library, which will include ear acupuncture, ear seeds, acupressure, a wide variety of free herbal medicines, Narcan, Fentanyl test strips, zines, and more. Chad Weckler has installed 107 photographs of individuals who have made a creative impact on the City of Hudson, N.Y., all of which were photographed between August 2022-July 2023 with a film 4x5 film camera. Weckler’s project is a timely documentation of a thriving arts community in Upstate New York. Hudson is a small city with a population of less than 6,000 people and is home to a myriad of creative individuals who work within the performing, musical, literary, and visual arts. Many of them are pioneers, drawn to Hudson before its rise to prominence, and are, in large part, the backbone and vibrancy of the community.

This project has been generously supported by a grant from the Martha Boschen Porter Fund, the New York State Council on the Arts, The Spark of Hudson in partnership with the Eutopia Foundation, a grant from The Bank of Greene County Charitable Foundation, and is supported by a grant from the Galvan Foundation, and his fiscal sponsor is the New York Foundation for the Arts.

The project will be exhibited in Hudson at the Private Public Gallery from April 20th to May 4th, 2024.

Spencertown Academy Arts Center Conversations with Neighbors presents “Let’s Chat About AI” on Sunday, April 21 at 2:00pm. A panel led by AI guru James Hendler will consider this ubiquitous phenomenon and its effect on a variety of human endeavors: technology, art, music, and society.

Hendler will kick off the discussion with his own views on the subject, followed by a discussion with a diverse array of local discussants, including Abby Fiorella, Stefan Kehlenbach, Orin Knopp, Victoria Sullivan, and Dusty Wright, moderated by Doug Grunther.

Every Monday at 7:30 p.m. No previous singing experience is required. For most of us, our voice is our most important medium of expression. With this voice we can sing, we can praise, we can express joy or pain, and we can teach. But often, our relationship with our voice becomes disconnected. We underestimate the effect our voice has on our bodies and our lives. This workshop is a doorway into reconnecting with your voice and expressing yourself more fully. Through a series of simple tones, or notes sung for long periods, we gently begin to observe the relationships between the voice, the body, the breath, and the self. This workshop is not affiliated with any spiritual practice. All people are welcome, and no singing experience is required. There is a short introduction and instruction, followed by 30 minutes of a guided toning series, and open discussion afterward (optional). Open to the public, but donations are graciously accepted. EMPAC at Rensselaer invites artists, technologists, scholars, and all arts enthusiasts to a work-in-progress dance performance by Onye Ozuzu.

SPACE CARCASSES is a new dance production that explores how architectures haunt the body and impart their histories to us as physical effects. Ozuzu's SPACE CARCASSES is inspired by Africanist, circular conceptions of time and expands on these traditions to enable connections to a communal self and to ancestors. Ozuzu situates the body as a technology with the power to access different moments across collective experience.

The production is performed in an architectural corner created within EMPAC Studio 1—Goodman Theater, which also functions as a projection surface. Large-scale video projections trail and replay live dancer’s movements in real-time, and a "sound dancer" uses EMPAC’s spatialization sound technology.

EMPAC work-in-progress events offer a window into the research, development, and production of new works by artists while in residence at the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center on the campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY.

The event is open to all.

In this Jacob Leisler Institute collaboration with the Hudson Area Library History Room, Owen Stanwood, Professor of History at Boston College, speaks about Mathieu Sagean, a Canadian explorer, raconteur, and inveterate liar. Sagean’s tales about Jacob Leisler and the early history of New York intrigued the elites of Europe during the early days of the 1700s and, though not to be relied upon, they give us a glimpse into the stories in this time period.

To celebrate their ten year anniversary in 2024, Dust Bowl Faeries perform a faerie-tale medley of dark cabaret and gothic polka music, infused with a dose of witchcraft and a dusting of woodland magic featuring special guest Melora Creager (of Rasputina) at Amanda Palmer's Graveside Variety listening room in Woodstock NY. The accordion driven freak-folk ensemble hails from the New York Hudson Valley and draws inspiration from circus music, murder ballads and Eastern European folk songs. Singing saw, piano accordion, acoustic guitar and electric bass combine to create the Dust Bowl Faeries otherworldly sound. Dust Bowl Faeries was founded by Ryder Cooley (faerie queen) and her taxidermy spirit animal, Hazel the Ram. Ryder and Hazel are joined by Jon B. Woodin (rocket faerie) and Jude Roberts (rocket faerie) for this special trio performance, with special guest Melora Creager on cello.

Singer-songwriter/cellist MELORA CREAGER is the founder of the cello rock band Rasputina. Melora has released numerous albums via her own label, Filthy Bonnet, and with Columbia Records. Over the years she has performed/recorded with the likes of Nirvana, Marilyn Manson, Siouxsie Sioux, and Voltaire. Melora will be joining Dust Bowl Faeries on cello at Graveside Variety.
