In 2017-2018, Werner created a series of public sound installations at Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier, including “Covenant of the Tongue” and “Zirkus,” which are sonic autoethnographies about Holocaust postmemory in Vienna. Her recent work is in live performance: sound installation meets documentary storytelling meets narrowcast radio transmission. Werner was a 2019 invited artist at the Kone Foundation’s Saari Residence in Finland and a 2017-2018 Fellow of the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture. Slippery Stairs are from Livingston Manor, New York where they use breakbeats and synths to keep warm in the winter. Their experimental techno mixes the dreaminess of New Age music with the hard edge of post-punk Goth. The duo is Stacy Wakefield and Nick Forte. Forte is behind projects such as Dawn People (DFA), Beautiful Skin (GSL), Christmas Decorations (Kranky) and solo electronics (Schematic, Amish, Catholic Tapes, Obsolete Units, etc.). Hudson Underground presents a solo exhibition of new works by New York artist and sand painter, Joe Mangrum. The exhibit includes exciting original permanent sand paintings, utilizing Mangrum’s signature technique of binding colored sand on canvas and carved-relief wood panels, as well as a selection of acrylic and oil paintings based on photographic documentation of sand paintings, forming a feedback loop of visual imagery. Karen Werner is a radio artist and sociologist. Her audio pieces have been broadcast on community and public radio stations across Europe, North America, Australia and Israel and have been part of numerous live events and art exhibitions. In 2017-2018, Werner created a series of public sound installations at Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier, including “Covenant of the Tongue” and “Zirkus,” which are sonic autoethnographies about Holocaust postmemory in Vienna. Her recent work is in live performance: sound installation meets documentary storytelling meets narrowcast radio transmission. Werner was a 2019 invited artist at the Kone Foundation’s Saari Residence in Finland and a 2017-2018 Fellow of the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture. She received a Tending Space Fellowship from the Hemera Foundation from 2014-2016 for artists with a Buddhist practice. Beginning September 2019, the Wave Farm Radio Artist Fellowship is nine-month, part-time engagement for an American radio artist with strong interests in the history of radio art and related practices. The Fellow will work closely with Wave Farm’s Executive Director, Galen Joseph-Hunter, and Artistic Director, Tom Roe, and will communicate regularly with Fellowship Mentors: Anna Friz, Joan Schuman, and Gregory Whitehead.

The fellow will develop an audio archive of noteworthy historic and contemporary radio artworks including brief introductory and contextual information for publication on the Wave Farm website. Drawing from the archive, produce approximately five hours of radio art programming weekly on Wave Farm’s WGXC 90.7-FM. The fellow will also create original radio artworks for broadcast and lead three workshops and/or listening sessions with WGXC’s volunteer programmers.

CREATE Council for Resources to Enrich the Arts, Technology & Education presents "10 x 10 Exhibit: Small Works Large Scale featuring original artwork created by CREATE Members and emerging artists. Opening reception, Saturday, November 23, 3-5 p.m., at CREATE’s Catskill Gallery, 398 Main Street in Catskill, NY. Exhibit runs through Jan. 4, 2020. This new Members Exhibit is first of its kind and challenges the artists’ creativity in many ways. First, to create small works. Second to present their work to be presented in the overall dimensions of exactly 10 inches x 10 inches. From there the possibilities are endless and vast. Though the artwork may be small in size, the scale is large balancing a thought, creativity, problem solving with unique voice and expression. Artists were offered the opportunity to create up to four works sanctioning the view to see a body of their work in one exhibit. Over 140 two-dimensional and sculptural works will be on display, most priced at $300 or less, just in time for holiday giving.

Hudson Underground presents a solo exhibition of new works by New York artist and sand painter, Joe Mangrum. The exhibit includes exciting original permanent sand paintings, utilizing Mangrum’s signature technique of binding colored sand on canvas and carved-relief wood panels, as well as a selection of acrylic and oil paintings based on photographic documentation of sand paintings, forming a feedback loop of visual imagery. Opening Reception: Friday December 6th 2019 5-8pm Live Painting Event: Saturday December 7th 2019 12-6pm Joe will create a live sand painting during open hours at the gallery that will remain throughout the duration of the show. About the performers:
BRASS QUEENS: Based out of NYC, this all female group is disrupting a male dominated genre. The Brass Queens perform a diverse repertoire featuring classic hits by woman artists, funk, soul and traditional NOLA second-line.

BRASSKILL: Brasskill is the Hudson Valley’s party brass band. Based in Hudson, NY and founded in the Spring of 2018, Brasskill’s membership covers a wide geographic area — from Rosendale in the south, all the way up to Great Barrington in the north. Bringing funky decibels to parties, parades and other merry gatherings in the Hudson Valley and surrounding areas, Brasskill’s music ranges from New Orleans second line tunes to punk and pop covers and is guaranteed to get your party out on the dance floor.

PONTOON combines the memory of childhood video games, superhero soundtracks, sci-fi and intergalactic life, with a passion for the unique, and never been done before. A sound experience that you didn’t know existed is what PONTOON delivers. They take seemingly traditional sounds and instruments, & run them through their creative brain grinders. The end result is a fantastically warped version of what you know music to be. 4 guys, vocals & vocoder, lots of brass, quadruple synthesizers, sound effects pedals and knobs, one standard drum kit, all the weird you can handle, and more cowbell.

SVB: full name Sarah Van Buren, most often located in upstate New York where she masterminds music + art festivals, throws deep dance parties and makes solo music in the realms of spooky pop / astral blues. SVB started DJing long ago at Emerson College in Boston at their freeform campus radio station, WECB. Later, while living in NYC, she co-founded CHERYL, a party / art collective that became infamous for throwing weird and wonderful dance parties and interactive events. With CHERYL, SVB performed and DJed at large nightlife and art events in and around NYC, in addition to touring abroad in the UK and Europe. Since moving to the Hudson Valley in 2014, she hosted a freeform late-nite radio show on WGXC called Pyramid Power! and co-founded a Hudson-based DJ collective called Mostly Girls. Wave Farm is delighted to announce our first Radio Artist Fellow selected from a competitive national open call.

Karen Werner is a radio artist and sociologist. Her audio pieces have been broadcast on community and public radio stations across Europe, North America, Australia and Israel and have been part of numerous live events and art exhibitions. In 2017-2018, Werner created a series of public sound installations at Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier, including “Covenant of the Tongue” and “Zirkus,” which are sonic autoethnographies about Holocaust postmemory in Vienna. Her recent work is in live performance: sound installation meets documentary storytelling meets narrowcast radio transmission. Werner was a 2019 invited artist at the Kone Foundation’s Saari Residence in Finland and a 2017-2018 Fellow of the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture. She received a Tending Space Fellowship from the Hemera Foundation from 2014-2016 for artists with a Buddhist practice. Werner produces the creative radio sonic zine Sketchpad, broadcast weekly on WMCB 107.9lpfm in Greenfield, Massachusetts, and she teaches workshops on radio art, radio autoethnography and politics of storytelling.
