Choreographer Adam H. Weinert’s "Rip the Nut" is a pantomime-style, Hudson Valley-inspired mash-up of the Rip Van Winkle story and Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite. Dancers Logan Kruger, Brett Perry, Davon Rainey, and Emma Sandall join Weinert and a host of community partners organized by Operation Unite NY for three performances.

Drop Forge & Tool is celebrating Hudson Winter Walk with our 2nd annual Kindling; a devised performance created by a group of creator/performers adept at making something from nothing. The group arrives on Thursday evening and will spend just 36 hours creating a new performance inspired by this year's theme: “gifting.” They will then share what they’ve made with the Winter Walk public on Saturday evening at 442 Warren Street. Performers: Barbra Berlovitz, Michael Hoch, Lisa Kitchens, Paul Kite, Amii LeGendre, Francis Magai, Mariana Newhard, and Micah Thomas. Wayne Horvitz is a composer, pianist, and electronic musician who has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. He is the leader of the Gravitas Quartet, Sweeter Than the Day, Zony Mash, The Four plus One Ensemble and co-founder of the New York Composers Orchestra. He has performed and collaborated with Bill Frisell, Butch Morris, John Zorn, George Lewis, Robin Holcomb, Fred Frith, Julian Priester, Michael Shrieve and Carla Bley, among others. Commissioners include the NEA, Meet the Composer, Kronos String Quartet, Seattle Chamber Players, BAM, and Earshot Jazz. Collaborators include Paul Taylor, Liz Lerman, Bill Irwin and Gus Van Sant. He has been the recipient of numerous awards including two MAP grants and the NEA American Masterpiece award. Recent compositions include The Heartsong of Charging Elk based on the novel by James Welch and 55: Music and Dance in Concrete: a site-specific collaboration with dancer Yukio Suzuki and video artist Yohei Saito. He is the music programmer for The Royal Room, a performance venue in Seattle, Washington, and a professor of composition at the Cornish College of the Arts. Basilica Hudson closes its 2018 season with a celebration of the arrival of winter and an interactive musical procession of candles, humans and myths. The whole family is invited to take some quiet time out of the modern world, into the candlelit past. The event is open to all. Hot cider, tea and apple cider donuts will be available to purchase. Attendees should dress warmly for this reframing and recreation of the ritual as a celebration of the natural environment as the season changes.

Produced in partnership with Harpooned Productions, Winter Spiral will be a large-scale installation and multidisciplinary performance featuring music, movement, sculpture and ritual and drawing on ancient traditions.

Weekly classes will resume on Tuesdays with two levels: Advanced Beginner (5:30-6:30pm) for students of Spanish who have taken at least an introductory course in the language, and Intermediate (6:45-7:45pm) for those conversational in Spanish and who wish to further develop their skills. Bobby Previte's Blueprints. Hudson valley composer Bobby Previte leads a conceptual performance, with webcasts at wgxc.org and wavefarm.org. Previte has invited some of his favorite musicians in the Hudson Valley and beyond for these inaugural concerts of his newest project, Blueprints. Starting from 1979 and going forward up to the present moment, Previte has ripped a fragment of nearly every piece of music he has written in the last 39 years and placed them all, divorced from their previous context, into one (very long) document. The ensemble will play, distort, improvise around, and sometimes ignore these fragments. Using hand signals, body movements, and the occasional odd glare, Previte conducts the musicians through the maze, taking a different path every night. Part performance, part open rehearsal, part hang out - where audience members as well as players will see the fragments projected on screen - Blueprints should be a wildly different experience each performance. Bill Brovold is an educator, visual artist, and composer/musician. He has performed with Rhys Chatham, Arthur Russell, and Glenn Branca; and led the New York band Strange Farm (featuring Billy Ficca of Television and Ernie Brooks of the Modern Lovers) and the six-to-thirteen-member Detroit post rock band Larval, which features his twangy guitar alongside a wall-of-sound onslaught of horns and strings. He has released music on John Zorn’s Avant and Tzadik imprints and the Cuneiform, Knitting Factory, and RareNoise labels (a duet with Jamie Saft for the latter). His most recent releases, for the Public Eyesore label, see him paring down his sound for more intimate surroundings—closer to what he might do with a few friends in someone’s living room. Peter Aaron is a rock/noise/free improvising musician and author. He is the founder, lead vocalist, and guitarist of the influential New York band the Chrome Cranks, who have released albums on Crypt, PCP Entertainment, Au Go Go, Sympathy for the Record Industry, Bang!, HoZac, Thick Syrup, and other labels. His past projects include the hardcore bands Sand in the Face and Sluggo and the psychedelic guitar duo Avondale Airforce. Currently, he performs with Hudson Valley trio Young Skulls and with Yeah Yeah Yeahs drummer Brian Chase in the free noise project Peter Aaron/Brian Chase Duo, whose debut album, Purges, appeared on the Public Eyesore label in 2016. The soundtrack he recorded with drummer Bobby Previte for the indie horror film The Furies Inside Me is set for release on Public Eyesore/Eh? in 2018. A multimedia performance of “Peace Be With You: Letters from Rap” with the Music Now! Unit. Theodore Burnett III performs music based on letters written by his father during deployment in Vietnam from 1968-1970. Funded in part by New Music USA. Ras Moshe Burnett is a native of Brooklyn NY, born on the 22nd of March 1968 into a family of musicians. He performs on the tenor sax, soprano sax and flute in the metropolitan area as well as performing as a ten year member of Bill Cole’s Untempered Ensemble. His paternal grandfather Theodore Burnett I (“Ted Barnett” professionally) performed on alto and tenor saxophones in the bands of Chick Webb, Lucky Millinder, Earl Bostic, Jimmy Mundy, Henri Woode, Don Redman, Benny Carter and Sister Rosetta Tharpe among others after his arrival from Jamaica in 1929. He can be viewed in early film footage performing with some of the orchestras listed. He wrote music for New Canaan Baptist Church in Brooklyn from the early 70’s to the early '90s. His father (Theodore Jacob Burnett II) played alto sax, and bass clarinet in the Brooklyn area throughout the '70s and '80s. He resumed musical activity from 2000 until his passing in 2014. Ras started music studies in the public schools from 5th grade throughout high school. He played with african drum groups and reggae bands from 1987 to the early 90’s before starting his own ensembles. He is a recent graduate with a B.A in music studies and preparing for a master’s program. He is a recently published poet, his poems being featured in The Metropolitan Review. He is the founder of the “Music Now!” series in 1999, a monthly presentation of jazz and new music initially at The Brecht Forum and currently extant at The Brooklyn Commons since 2011. WGXC is broadcasting this show from the signal of our partner station, WOOC-LP in Troy, New York.

This year, the Camphill Hudson Community has come together to put on this play for their friends and neighbors in the city of Hudson.

Lord Youth is the songwriting project of Micah Blaichman of Queens, NY. Blaichman began studying the violin at age three but quickly lost all of his musical education upon becoming introduced to punk rock at age 12. Later he moved to Berlin, making a living busking ancient blues and country songs in bars and cafes, playing four-string banjo in hot jazz bands, and touring throughout the US and Europe with the psychedelic ragtime group Tik Tok Laboratories. His music has been described as old wave, folk noir, lo-fi stoner americana, and bedroom garage. Unsilent Night is an original composition by Phil Kline, written specifically to be heard outdoors in the month of December, always as a free event. It takes the form of a street promenade in which the audience becomes the performer. Each participant gets one of four tracks of music. Originally the music was played using only cassette tapes in boomboxes, but as vintage boomboxes have become harder to find, more people use smartphones with portable speakers to blast the music. ocal Charles Dickens enthusiast Stewart Sommerville will present a discussion of the Christmas writings of Charles Dickens. Although known primarily for the iconic A Christmas Carol, Dickens’ association with the holiday remains a powerful influence on Anglo-American holiday celebrations to this day. Mr. Sommerville will discuss how this relationship changed traditional Victorian celebrations of the holiday through the entire cannon of Dickens’ Christmas writings prior to and including A Christmas Carol and beyond. Directly following Santa’s arrival on the Village Green, the Hudson Valley’s own Robert Burke Warren – aka Uncle Rock – returns to the Colony to play another rollicking set of rocking holiday tunes! Expect to hear faves like Chuck Berry’s “Run, Run Rudolph,” the Springsteen arrangement of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” and Brenda Lee’s “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree,” as well as traditional classic singalongs. “It’s a community event, for families, singletons, youngsters, elders, everyone,” Robert says. “The kitchen and the bar will be open, and they’ll be serving hot chocolate, mulled cider, and hot toddies. Folks can drop in and get warm in front of the fireplace, and connect with friends and fellow community members before heading home from Santa’s arrival.”

Djam Gong performs original music on Balinese gamelan instruments such as: gongs, flutes, drums, and metal percussion. Djam Gong is Bill Ylitalo's musical project, incorporating Balinese gamelan instruments along with occasional Western instruments such as electronic effects and saxophone. The players include: Bill Ylitalo, Brian Farmer, Chris Andersen, and others. Djam Gong (gong time) is a musical ensemble from New York's Hudson Valley led by composer and multi-instrumentalist, Bill Ylitalo. Bill has studied and performed gamelan music for 40 years and is currently the director of the Balinese Gamelan Program at Bard College. Happens on the Third Floor.

Frenchy and The Punk Celebrate the release of their new album "Hooray Beret." Imagine Siouxsie Sioux and Dee Dee Ramone had a duo that was inspired by Django Reinhardt, Edith Piaf, Toulouse Lautrec and Deepak Chopra, this is what it might sound like. The Dust Bowl Faeries are a dark-carnival band based in Hudson, NY. Accordion, singing saw, ukulele, lap-steel, guitar and percussion swirl together, creating a melange of circus, post-punk, Gypsy and psyche-folk music.

Local history speaker series with a talk by David Vorhees. Widespread female violence against men is found in the records of the 1689 New York uprising popularly known as “Leisler’s Rebellion.” Indeed, women played a prominent role in the uprising. This talk by the director of the Leisler Institute for the Study of Early New York History explores this outburst of activism among New York women a generation after the English takeover of New Netherland.

Bobby Previte's Blueprints. Hudson valley composer Bobby Previte leads a conceptual performance, with webcasts at wgxc.org and wavefarm.org. Previte has invited some of his favorite musicians in the Hudson Valley and beyond for these inaugural concerts of his newest project, Blueprints. Starting from 1979 and going forward up to the present moment, Previte has ripped a fragment of nearly every piece of music he has written in the last 39 years and placed them all, divorced from their previous context, into one (very long) document. The ensemble will play, distort, improvise around, and sometimes ignore these fragments. Using hand signals, body movements, and the occasional odd glare, Previte conducts the musicians through the maze, taking a different path every night. Part performance, part open rehearsal, part hang out - where audience members as well as players will see the fragments projected on screen - Blueprints should be a wildly different experience each performance. David Muska, Wilderness Skills Instructor/ NYS Guide, Ondatra Adventures, will teach the fundamentals of tracking and will help you develop your skills through techniques such as clear print identification and track patterns. The library, SBK Social Justice Center and OutHudson present a screening of this documentary about Bayard Rustin, activist & organizer, who was central to the Civil Rights Movement. He worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. including on the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Rustin often took a back seat because his open homosexuality forced him from the public eye. The Community Music Space, located at the Chocolate Factory in Red Hook, is an artistic educational center that provides a voice for music and acting in the Hudson Valley. Curated by Ashley Hopkins-Benton, Senior Historian/Curator of Social History at the New York State Museum, the inspiration for this exhibition came in part from a conversation with her uncle, Bruce Hopkins. Since 1995 the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus has traveled the world, bringing its unique hybrid of Vaudeville, Circus, Burlesque, and Sideshow to theaters, clubs, colleges, and festivals. This show is for adults only.

Do you appreciate folk art a la Grandma Moses? If the answer is "yes," you won't want to miss the paintings of Allen Foster. Foster has been professionally recreating Columbia County village scenes and individual historic homes for over half a century. As he nears his 90th birthday, some of Allen’s work is now on display through March 1 in the recently dedicated Meeting Room of the Kinderhook Memorial Library. Local residents throughout the county have generously loaned their paintings of Kinderhook scenes and Columbia County homes; works from Mr. Foster's private collection round out the show.
