Basilica SoundScape, a curated weekend that’s been called “the anti­festival” for offering of a mix of music, visual art, and literature, is presented by The Creative Independent’s Brandon Stosuy and Basilica Hudson co-founders Melissa Auf der Maur and Tony Stone with additional creative direction from long-time visual and design director of SoundScape, and former Pitchfork Creative Director Mike Renaud – now head of Chicago-based integrated creative studio Varyer, who are formally joining the team as co-presenters of the event. SoundScape 2018 will also feature the talents of two guest collaborators, author Jenn Pelly (Pitchfork, 33 ⅓: The Raincoats) and head of Sacred Bones Records Caleb Braaten. Performers: Boy Harsher, Efrim Manuel Menuck, FlucT, Grouper, Hanif Abdurraqib, Haxan Cloak and Nick Zinner, Hermione Hoby, Insect Ark, Joey De Jesus, Jungil Hong, Lightning Bolt, Laleh Khorramian, L’Rain, Miho Hatori, Photay, Shanekia McIntosh, Shopping, Spellling, Stephen O’Malley’s Un Vide Dans Le Ciel, Tabita Rezaire, Usnea, and Wax Idols.

The film is directed by Ethan Hawke and co-written with Sybil Rosen who’s memoir, Living in the Woods in a Tree, inspired the film about the late Texas Outlaw musician, Blaze Foley. Rosen will be a special guest at the screening of the film on Sept. 15 to discuss Foley's life and music and the making of the film. The band Uneven Steven will perform in the Projectionists Club Garden ahead of the screening. The film begins at dusk, approximately 7:30 p.m.

Walk to fight suicide. the event raises awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss.

The FASNY Museum of Firefighting hosts a family-friendly program on fire safety, open to residents of Columbia County and museum members as well as the general public. Guests will meet live forest animals and learn how fire destroys their habitats and threatens their lives. Smokey Bear will greet and pose for pictures with children, and a Forest Ranger will visit and show kids equipment used to fight forest fires.

The WGXC Record Fair coincides with Basilica SoundScape (Sept 14-16), an immersive, innovative weekend of art, music, and culture, which draws an audience in the thousands. Hausu Mountain: With one tentacle threaded through the US noise underground and one ear fixed on a worldwide online network of freak-friendly minds, the Hausu Mountain label has pumped a diverse menu of experimental music from its volcanic peak at a steady clip since 2012. Founded in Chicago by musicians and roommates Doug Kaplan (who records as MrDougDoug) and Max Allison (who records as Mukqs), the label originally served as a home for their own projects, including the trio Good Willsmith. As Kaplan and Allison discover new projects from touring the DIY circuit and scraping through the strangest corners of the internet, the label’s wide catalog grows to encompass everything from otherworldly synthesizer composition to frantic beat production in the IDM tradition to strains of free jazz infused with electronics alongside horns or drums – onward through any number of genre-bending mutations you might find in the “???” or “Avant/Noise” bin in your local record store. As much as Hausu Mountain’s releases diverge in terms of style, the label’s aesthetic hinges on the conception of music as a force to both challenge listeners and entertain them in equal measure. Any given release resists stasis, skips at will through disparate musical vocabularies, and leads listeners through dense sonic narratives that defy expectations as each new idea or unpredictable juxtaposition pierces through the cosmic jelly. In addition to LPs and cassettes from the label, we will have a selection of used records culled from our personal collections and adventures.

The Hudson Area Library and the City of Hudson Senior Center are offering a 12-week Creative Writing class, taught by author, artist, educator, and social activist Maureen McNeil. Held weekly on Thursdays from September 20 through December 13, the series runs from 2:30 to 4pm. Students will explore memories, sensory observation, dreams, autobiography, fiction, and poetry, and will share a selection of their work. All levels of writers are welcome. A zine of student work will be available at the library and on the library’s website, and a final celebration of student writing will be held in the library on December 13.

Stickney is an American theremin player who has performed and recorded with David Byrne, Yoko Ono, Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, Seb Rochford, Otto Lechner and Simone Dinnerstein, and was instrumental to the final design of Robert Moog's Etherwave Pro Theremin, for which she was the primary test musician.
