A four-hour class devoted to teaching you what you need to know to carve a wooden spoon. Covered in the class are the basics of wood identification; as well as the layout, carving and finishing a hardwood wooden spoon. We'll focus on carving technique, and hopefully, by the end of the class, participants will leave with a spoon of their own making, as well as the wood, skills and tools necessary to start another spoon. The Northeast Fiddlers' Convention with instrument contests in the evening, concert and square dance, until midnight. Simon Joyner, an American singer-songwriter who first came to prominence during the Lo-Fi movement of the early 90's is touring on his latest album, "Step Into the Earthquake." Hudson valley composer Bobby Previte leads a conceptual performance, with webcasts at wgxc.org and wavefarm.org. Previte has invited some of his favorite musicians in the Hudson Valley and beyond for these inaugural concerts of his newest project, Blueprints. Starting from 1979 and going forward up to the present moment, Previte has ripped a fragment of nearly every piece of music he has written in the last 39 years and placed them all, divorced from their previous context, into one (very long) document. The ensemble will play, distort, improvise around, and sometimes ignore these fragments. Using hand signals, body movements, and the occasional odd glare, Previte conducts the musicians through the maze, taking a different path every night. Part performance, part open rehearsal, part hang out - where audience members as well as players will see the fragments projected on screen - Blueprints should be a wildly different experience each performance.

The third annual Ramble is upon us! Huyck Perserve is hosting a joint fundraiser for the Preserve and the Rensselaerville Library in this fun-for-all-ages recreational event. One of the Daniel's Art Party Performing Arts Festival's interactive performances, the Scavenger Hunt is a sprawling, campus-wide, theatrical hunt created by director/designer Michael Counts, whom The New York Times calls a “master of immersive theater,” with art design by fiber artist and sculptor Huck Elling. This high art/technology scavenger hunt will lead teams of audience members all over the campus. Interacting with performers and following theatrical clues, the teams will compete to be the first to navigate the course. There will be multimedia components and use of cell phone beacon technology to assist audience members in the hunt. The Claverack Free Library presents a program by counselor Claudia Coenen. All of us experience grief at various times in our lives, and it is often challenging to know how to help someone else. The community is invited to join a conversation about what to say, what not to say, and how to truly help someone who is grieving. Claudia Coenen is a certified grief counselor with a private practice in Hudson, NY. After the death of her husband in 2005, Claudia studied thanatology, which is the science of death, dying and bereavement, in an effort to understand how we grieve and how we can help each other. Her life as a performing artist and writer informs her creative approach.

Opening reception. The show commemorates the 200th anniversary of Thomas Cole’s first Atlantic crossing, presented by the Greene County Council on the Arts. "New School" is a group exhibition of local artists who create artwork inspired by the Hudson River School that Cole founded. Artists were asked to submit work that represents contemporary interpretations of the Hudson River School, rather than mimicking the classic landscape style. Open to the public. Educator and author Ellen Condliffe Lagemann will speak on “Liberating Minds,” her book advocating for a free college education for everyone in prison. The Secret City is one of seven interactive performances in the Daniel's Art Party Performing Arts Festival. Inspired by traditional services of belief, Obie Award-winning performer Chris Wells creates a secular revival show with art as the entity being praised. This piece is an in-depth exploration into the traditions of firefighting through storytelling by Berkshire Firefighters and photography by Fire Chief Ed Harvey. A presentation by culinary historian Peter G. Rose on hand-written cookbooks as documents of social and family history. Examples of recipe/scrapbooks, dating as far back as the late seventeenth century will be examined. The audience is encouraged to bring old family cookbooks or recipe boxes. Presented by the Jacob Leisler Institute, in cooperation with Hudson Area Library and the Gotham Center for New York History.

Dumptruck (Seth Tiven, guitar; Alan Durham, guitar, WGXC DJ Spike Priggen, bass; Shawn King Devlin, drums) perform an in-store show playing songs from their new record plus old favorites. This will be Dumptruck's only full-band show in the Hudson Valley.

Hudson valley composer Bobby Previte leads a conceptual performance, with webcasts at wgxc.org and wavefarm.org. Previte has invited some of his favorite musicians in the Hudson Valley and beyond for these inaugural concerts of his newest project, Blueprints. Starting from 1979 and going forward up to the present moment, Previte has ripped a fragment of nearly every piece of music he has written in the last 39 years and placed them all, divorced from their previous context, into one (very long) document. The ensemble will play, distort, improvise around, and sometimes ignore these fragments. Using hand signals, body movements, and the occasional odd glare, Previte conducts the musicians through the maze, taking a different path every night. Part performance, part open rehearsal, part hang out - where audience members as well as players will see the fragments projected on screen - Blueprints should be a wildly different experience each performance.

Oral History Summer School presents a screening of "CareForce One Travelogues" at the Hudson Area Library, a documentary by artist Marisa Jahn about the fastest growing workforce in America: caregivers. Filmmaker Marisa Jahn travels around in the CareForce One car, talking to nannies, home health workers, housecleaners, and allies about their work. This series explores how care intersects with some of today's most pressing issues — immigration, the legacies of slavery, racial discrimination, and more. Tour the Letterbox Farm, forage in the fields and environs for some dyestuffs, and learn two different ways to color cloth with natural dyes. Participants in the Drop Forge and Tool workshop will create and experiment with three dye baths- avocado stones, onion skins, and a seasonal foraged pot. Students will also create a bundle dyed silk scarf using colorful flowers and other dyestuffs found on the farm. Participants will go over choosing, preparing, and mordanting textiles and how to extract color from natural dyestuffs, and work with an array of textile swatches to see how different fibers take dyes.

Workshop participants will learn how to “rub off” a pattern from an existing garment; then stitch up a fit sample to test the pattern and tweak it if necessary. In this workshop learn to use sunshine to make images on paper and fabric. Artist Caitlin Parker will teach the process of making cyanotype photograms, one of the oldest forms of photography that doesn't use a camera. Participants will learn how to prepare paper and fabric with light sensitive chemicals, compose images using a wide variety of objects and materials including pressed botanicals, and develop the prints in the sunshine.

Visitors are invited to come hike the Huyck as part of MHLC's annual Hike-a-thon event. Kelly Martin, local animal rehabilitator, will lead participants on a light walk and then conclude with a close look at her rescued animals. All are welcome.
