Audio Buffet: "ADrift in Zwolle" by Karina Townsend
Produced by many contributors.
Tune in for a livestream of "ADrift in Zwolle" by Karina Townsend from Zwolle, Netherlands. "ADrift in Zwolle," in collaboration with Rachit Puri (Future Storytelling Lab), is an audiovisual environmental sound art performance that explores humans’ relationship with water and examines rivers that attracted humans to their banks and continue to sustain us. The performance asks the following question: What do we hear when we listen with the river? Water is explored as a living medium charged with agency in the way that rivers flow seaward, canals carry history, and listening to subaquatic worlds gives us fresh insights into a world less visited, an alternative soundtrack to our familiar, visually dominated, sensory cinema. Participants are invited to investigate how the power of our situated, embodied, and multisensory perception plays a role in understanding our entangled relationship with our environments.
For the performance on-site in Zwolle, the audience will be in a cafe and terrace and invited to wear silent disco headphones so that they hear what Townsend hears, a direct auditory connection with the subaquatic city. But they'll be warm and enjoying soup, while she'll be adrift in the chill, November dawn!
This performance is presented as part of ELIA Biennial Conference 2026: Going Off Centre hosted by ArtEZ University of the Arts in Zwolle, Netherlands.
