Overlooked: Juneteenth, Black Lives Matter

Overlooked: Juneteenth, Black Lives Matter. From Rob Saffer. (Jun 23, 2020)

Hosted by Rob Saffer.

This broadcast will honor Juneteenth and the Black Lives Matter movement with music by Ben LeMar Gay, Max Roach, Matthew Evan Taylor, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and Jefferson Airplane (really?); interspersed with new releases that highlight vocals by Santrofi, Asher Gamedze, Sara Serpa, Cory Smythe, Jasmine Dreame Wagner; new releases that showcase guitars by Rose City Band, Silver Scrolls, John Scofield, Sonar, Tim Stine, Jim White and Marissa Anderson, and Sharon Isbin; plus, other new music by The Soft Pink Truth, Memory Foam, Rose City Band, Vijay Iyer and Mike Ladd, Adam Rudolph, and Dave Glasser.

After the local news at noon, “Overlooked” is a show focusing on overlooked and under-heard jazz, improvisational, and other fringe music, from early roots to contemporary experiments, a mix of familiar to rare, classic to weird.

Host Rob Saffer is the former Executive Director and Producer of the Creative Music Foundation. While living in Brooklyn for 25 years, he served on advisory boards for Celebrate Brooklyn and Symphony Space. He also curated the Brooklyn Museum’s summer jazz series and helped found The Mingus Big Band.
