Auditions: Janitors Smith and Crumpet - "Headfood". (Nov 25, 2026)

Hosted by various prospective WGXC volunteer programmers.

Each Headfood program is a two-hour (1:58:00 minutes) combination of experimental music compositions, experimental film soundtracks, multi phased audio mixing and spoken word, created and collected by sound artists and filmmakers Janitors Smith and Crumpet. The film work of Janitors Smith and Crumpet has been referred to as a kind of sound/music “Fritto Misto.” Imagine the voices of James Joyce and Salvador Dali slowed, reversed and sped up, mixed with backwards trombone, a 1960’s Coca Cola commercial, a fragment from a lecture on Taoism and an orchestral splash from John Cage. Titles of original musical compositions featured in the first Headfood show made for WGXC include “PhilosHackBrown”, “LungeLizard”, “Caged Beach” and “TaoNouvTMCJoyce”. The show is experimental and looks both backward and forward at the same time. The creative endeavours of Janitors Smith and Crumpet find inspiration in these challenging words from Jean-Luc Godard: “You don’t make a movie. The movie makes you.”

Janitors Smith and Crumpet began experimenting together late nights at a San Diego student radio station.

Their sound work has been featured at The Mess Hall Experimental Music Festival in Chicago. Janitor Crumpet described working with Janitor Smith on their Brooklyn installation piece titled Sound In-Stalls One, Two, Three as "like dropping a rusty Cadillac into your birdbath.” Their award winning short films have been screened in Berlin, Paris, Lisbon, Urbino, Bangkok and Grand Rapids film festivals. Their films have been awarded Best Sound Design Awards and in 2026 their film GodCocteauTheory was awarded Best Experimental Film at the Psychedelic Film and Music Festival in New York City.
