Degree in 1975 from Oxford. He was an Assistant Professor of History at Yale University, 1975 – 1978, a Lecturer, then Reader, in History at the University of London from 1978 – 1990; and a Professor of History at Yale University, where remained from 1991 until his retirement in 2018.
