Special Radio for Open Ears pledge drive edition. Our 2019 Carnival series continues, this time with the spotlight on Haiti, whose annual Kanaval is one of the largest Mardi Gras celebrations in the Caribbean and North America. Due to current socio-political upheaval, this year's festival (March 3rd through 5th) has been cancelled in the capital, Port-au-Prince, for possibly the first time in Haiti's history as an independent nation. But the music carries on as the soul and spirit of Kanaval! More prolific than ever, with more than 500 songs released specifically for the occasion, this year's themes reflect the mood of the masses while channeling their anger and frustration into joyful, creative expression. Extending into a third hour, we'll be joined by Carlene Murphy and Azouke Sanon, hosts of "Li Le, Li Tan" – WGXC's weekly Haitian culture and news program – for a discussion about Kanaval 2019 in light of current events. Music for the Masses invites you on an excursion of sound and rhythm. Discover the music of established and emerging artists, both signed and unsigned, on the international music scene. Expect the unexpected. You might want to pack a map and a sandwich. For the avid globe-hopper and armchair traveler alike. Broadcast live from the Hudson studio.
