Writer Ben McGrath made me think of rivers and waterways as one of America's last toll-free routes open, and taunting, anyone ready for adventure. His book — Riverman: An American Odyssey — has captured my brain and heart. It's about Dick Conant, a paddler and people person, who spent decades traveling the continent's river byways. McGrath and Conant met on the Hudson River and offers up an obsessive tale of the two of them.
