At noon today, July 4, WGXC's Monday Musical Matinee, with Lincoln Mayorga, will be an American program. The major work is the Symphony No. 3 by Aaron Copland, dean of American composers. The "Fanfare For The Common Man" is part of this symphony. There will be some patriotic songs by Irving Caesar, who wrote many great songs including "Swanee" and "Tea For Two". These well-crafted songs were recorded for children after the second World War, and are lessons in friendship, respect and appreciation of diverse people and cultures. The controversial work on the program is a collage of songs and speech excerpts from World War I, recorded at the time, illustrating the tragedy of war and how that war was sold through racist propaganda and music. Finally we will hear pianist Vladimir Horowitz performing his brilliant rendition of "The Stars And Stripes Forever".
