The latest Hudson Valley Word of Mouth segment, Julia Joern heads to Columbia County to visit Art Austerlitz, housed in an old church at Old Austerlitz, home to the Austerlitz Historical Society. Located on a 20-acre site along both sides of State Route 22, the historic houses and structures of Old Austerlitz offer visitors a sense of what life was like in the mid 1800s. Originally built in 1853, the church is currently being used for a series of contemporary art exhibitions. This June, the Newburgh-based artist Liz Nielson has a solo show of ‘cameraless’ photography — known as photograms — installed on the church’s vestibule and main interior space, as well as the pews. Nielson has exhibited around the world in cities like New York, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Chicago, and Berlin, but her work is often on view here in the Hudson Valley. She also shares tips about recommended art projects in our region, including Elijah Wheat Showroom and Strongroom in Newburgh, Mother Gallery and Fridman Gallery in Beacon, and the Wassaic Project.
