Hosted by Rob Saffer.
In this installment of Overlooked, host Rob Saffer will share with WGXC listeners the music of the Mardi Gras Indians—social clubs or ’tribes’ that blend African, Cuban, Latin American, Native American, New Orleans, Jazz, Gospel and a whole lot of special sauce to blend a gumbo of singular music that’s as colorful and intricately polyrhythmic as the feathered costumes they wear when parading around New Orleans. We’ll listen to some early recordings, short clips from filmmaker Les Blank’s stunning documentary “Always for Pleasure”, Wild Magnolias, Wild Tchoupitoulas, Bo Dollis, The Golden Eagles, and a fusion of jazz and Mardi Gras Indian tunes by Donald Harrison. This deep yet upbeat, political, humorous, dance music has inspired musicians like the Neville Bros, Dr. John, and even the Grateful Dead (Aiko Aiko).
