Radia Show 1121: The Rössl Radia Show (Radio Orange 94.0)

The Palais Rössl is a cross-generational, multidisciplinary, growing symbiotic network of artists, musicians, designers and cultural practitioners in the heart of Vienna, as well as a hybrid entity transcending time and space, open to interconnections of all kinds. We share a love of communal spaces and poetic-political co-creation, with sound and soundproduction serving as a strong binding force.

Spanning 700 m², the space is home to art studios, music studios, rehearsal rooms, workshops, exhibition spaces, communal areas and a garden for fish.

Two members of the Viennese Radia collective – Karl H. Schönswetter and Lale Rodgarkia-Dara – as well as a former member, Maria Herold, are key contributors to the Palais Rössl. Maria Herold collected sound clips from artists at the Palais Rössl which provide an acoustic insight into the ‘Soundpalais Rössl’.

At the Radia Show No. 1121 “The Rössl Radia Show” you will listen to the work of Auto Sophia, Bassano, TJ Tall, Lale Rodgarkia-Dara, Herrror and The Sir Teens. The Show is embedded by the live-performance of “under the given circumstances” by JUUN and Lale Rodgarkia-Dara at the Re-Compose-Festival 2021.

AUTO SOPHIA – Excerpt from Verwüstung

This is an excerpt from Verwüstung, an audiovisual performance about structural violence in gynecological surgery, created in collaboration with Constanza Mendoza as scar sisters.

Anto Manhartsberger, also known as Auto Sophia, is a sound and performance artist. Her artistic and academic interests lie in sound art in public spaces, the spatialization of sound, the socio-political potential of new media and technologies, audiovisual design, and collective artistic practice.

His music is influenced by soca, reggae, and dub, blending these genres with a distinctly queer perspective. It can be described as raw, political, and dance-driven.

Each week one member of the Radia Network produces a show for all the others. The Radia Network emerged from a series of meetings, clandestine events, late-night club discussions, and a lot of email exchanges between cultural radio producers across Europe. The topics vary and the reasons for forming a network are many, but Radia has become a concrete manifestation of the desire to use radio as an art form. The approaches differ, as do the local contexts; from commissioned radio art works to struggles for frequencies to copyright concerns, all the radios share the goal of an audio space where something different can happen. That different is also a form in the making––radio sounds different in each city, on each frequency. Taking radio as an art form, claiming that space for creative production in the mediascape and cracking apart the notion of radio, is what Radia does.

It is producing radio stuff that is hard to describe. Some of it can be labeled radio art, or experimental radio, or creative radio. Sometimes it talks, sometimes it doesn’t. It can be noisy, or a kind of soundscape, or a documentary, a document, a talk, a performance. Each and every week, one of the partners will provide the network program, commissioned and produced especially for this purpose: being broadcast by all the partners and made available online.

Some things have to be said about all those partners. They are radio stations, of the independent, non-commercial, community, cultural species. They all speak different languages, and this should create interesting problems. Although initially they were all European radio stations this has changed over time, and Radia has become not only larger but also more diverse: 22 partners in 14 countries and growing all the time.
