The history of high school student activism here in America can be traced to a group of mostly Mexican-American students from five schools in East Los Angeles, who walked out of their schools beginning March 1, 1968, until their academic and administrative demands were met. The 1968 East Los Angeles High School Walkouts set the stage for policy change within the L.A. Unified School District and helped grow the Chicano social identity and political movement. In this program we present Pacifica's March 13, 1968 interview with then UCLA student Juan Gomez, who was one of the advisors to the high school students. The list of student demands are read currently by Nancy Sanchez. We also present comments and sounds from the Cal State-Los Angeles University 50th anniversary commemoration event held on March 2, 2018.
