This installment of WGXC’s Overlooked will celebrate the May 22, 1914 ‘arrival day’ of Herman Sonny Blount, better known as Sun Ra, the space—jazz keyboardist/bandleader/composer/arranger/philosopher/poet and godfather of AfroFuturism, often known for his otherworldly costumes and outrageous live performances. Host Rob Saffer and special guest and former MTV colleague Michael Shore (who authored liner notes for several Ra CD’s) will focus on a central yet often overlooked and underappreciated aspect of this unique and colorful artist’s music—Sun Ra the composer.
