During this rebroadcast from Aug. 21, 2022, travel back to a time when the global economy was in crisis and people everywhere were facing inflation, unemployment, and the collapse of the dreams brought by advances of the previous decade. We’re talking, of course, about the 1970s to mid-’80s — when the musical melting pot boiled over and disco took over dance clubs around the world — offering a sense of freedom and escape through fantasy, fashion, sex, drugs, and other excesses. In this second broadcast in a series on the disco era, listeners will journey to the African continent to imagine the dance floors of Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Somalia, South Africa, Togo, and Zambia, between the years 1975-1986.

"Music for the Masses" invites you on an excursion of sound and rhythm. Discover the music of established and emerging artists, both signed and unsigned, on the international music scene. For the avid globe-hopper and armchair traveler alike. You might want to pack a map and a sandwich. Catskill resident "DJ Neva" is an ethnomusicologist, producer, and long-time cultural activist, specializing in music from the entire African continent, as well as the Caribbean and Latin America, the Maghreb and Middle East, and the Roma (Gypsy) diaspora. Formerly the producer of "Continental Drift" on WBAI-FM and New York International on Haitian community station Radio Soleil in NYC. The show is broadcast live from Catskill, NY.
