Near closing time on March 25, 1911, a fire broke out at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City. Because the owners had locked the doors to the stairwells and exits, many of the workers could not escape and jumped from the high windows. Within 18 minutes, 146 people were dead as a result of the fire. It was one of the deadliest industrial disasters in US history. This Sprouts rebroadcasts commemorates the anniversary of this event, which led to legislation requiring improved factory safety standards and helped spur the growth of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU), which fought for better working conditions for sweatshop workers. Produced and narrated by Mimi Rosenberg and Ken Nash of Building Bridges, WBAI-Pacifica in NYC.
